The Boeing Company delivered stellar fourth-quarter 2014 results on booming deliveries. Its top and bottom lines beat expectations. The North American jet plane maker surpassed its European rival Airbus in 2014 for the third consecutive year. Boeing booked 1,432 net orders in 2014, up 5.7% from 1,355 a year ago, breaking the previous all-time high set in 2007. Its recent move to restructure its defense and space business – a ploy to cut costs and enhance efficiency in a declining U.S. military budget environment – is appreciable. However, the headwinds Boeing faces from U.S. defense budget cuts, the uncertain fate of high-cost programs, risks related to key project executions and order cancellations raise concerns.
