Read MoreHide Full Article

Apple’s (AAPL - Free Report) annual event, Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), didn’t throw any breakthrough surprises this year. However, it reflected the company’s continued focus on boosting the Services business through cutting-edge software.

As usual, the company unveiled a plethora of software updates, which includes the next versions of iOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS. Moreover, iPad now has its own operating system, iPadOS.

In terms of hardware, Apple showcased the new Mac Pro and Pro XDR 6K display.

Let’s delve deep into the announcements.

iOS 13 — Dark Mode & New Privacy Feature Added

Apple previewed iOS 13 that adds dark mode to the iPhone. The dark mode is soothing for eyes as the background switches from white to black.

Notably, Alphabet (GOOGL - Free Report) division Google has added a dark mode to Android Q operating systems. Dark Mode is also available in Google Chrome, Facebook’s Messenger, Slack and Twitter .

Moreover, per The Verge, for smartphones with OLED display, the mode apparently saves some battery life. This bodes well for iPhone users as per Digitimes, cited by 9TO5Mac. Apple is expected to launch three new iPhones featuring OLED displays in 2020. Currently, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max offer OLED screens.

Further, the latest update offers “Sign In with Apple” that allows customers to use their Apple ID to sign into apps and websites, instead of using Facebook or Google social accounts. Users can also authenticate using their Face ID or Touch ID. The feature is backed by two-factor authentication built in for an added layer of security.

iOS 13 — Updated Maps, Siri, CarPlay, HomePod

Apple is updating its Maps application with the upcoming iOS 13. The Maps application is now available in select cities and states. It will roll out the same across the United States by the end of 2019 and to more countries in 2020.

The latest iOS 13 update also features a naturally sounding Siri. Moreover, with AirPods, Siri can now read incoming messages as soon as they arrive, from Messages or any SiriKit enabled messaging app.

Further, Apple updates CarPlay with a new Dashboard to view music, maps and more in a single view, a new Calendar app, and Siri support for third-party navigation and audio apps.

The company’s smart-speaker HomePod is also updated with new features. The device can now distinguish voices from anyone in the home to deliver personal requests, including messages, music and more.

Additionally, Live radio gives Siri access to more than 100,000 radio stations from iHeartRadio, Radio.com and TuneIn. A new sleep timer turns off music after a set time.

Additionally, the new Handoff feature enables users to easily move music, podcasts or a phone call to HomePod upon arriving at home.

Apple Unveils New OS for iPad

Apple introduced a new operating system for iPad. The upcoming iPadOS features a redesigned Home Screen with a new layout to show more apps in each page, deeper integration with Apple Pencil and iCloudDrive support for the Files app.

New feature like “Split View” helps users work with multiple files and documents from the same app simultaneously. The “Slide Over” feature helps users to quickly view and switch between multiple apps.

Moreover, the new iPadOS will add dark mode, “Sign In with Apple”, new Maps and a new floating keyboard, among others, to iPad.

System Performance to Improve

Both iOS 13 and iPadOS are likely to improve system performance. Face ID unlock is expected to become smoother in both iPhone and iPad with the latest update.

Moreover, iPhone and iPad app download sizes will decrease by 50%, which will make app updates more than 60% smaller. This will result in apps launching much faster.

Both iOS 13 and iPadOS will be available in the fall of 2019.
