Micron-Xilinx Partner for Heterogeneous Compute Platforms

Read MoreHide Full Article

Micron Technology (MU - Free Report) recently announced that its memory solutions have been adopted by Xilinx to fortify the performance of the latter’s adaptive compute acceleration platform (ACAP) Versal.

By working together, Micron and Xilinx aim to develop low-latency heterogeneous compute platforms to meet the compute and data processing requirements of AI applications.

The Versal ACAP will primarily use Micron Xccela flash as well as other memory solutions like DDR4, LPDDR4X, e.MMC 5.1 and serial NOR products to achieve quicker system startup and higher system responsiveness in AI-based automotive, industrial, networking and consumer applications. Notably, Xilinx Versal ACAP is designed for AI inference in data center, automotive, 5G infrastructure, aerospace, defense, and test and measurement applications.

Why Xilinx Chose Micron’s Solutions

The rising complexity of AI and ML systems is leading to the need for powerful bandwidth for memory and storage, to achieve faster and more efficient data processing to avoid performance and throughput bottlenecks while generating insights.

Applications such as autonomous driving that have multiple displays and sensors need particularly quicker power on, reset or reboot capability to ensure timely delivery of information for quick action.

Memory and storage are key components of next-generation systems in autonomous vehicles, including advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) technology. Micron offers memory products like DRAM, NAND, LPDDR and SSD, all of which are important to build a memory-hungry autonomous vehicle.

Significantly, Xccela flash delivers up to 400 megabytes per second while consuming 30% less effective energy per bit compared with traditional quad SPI NOR flash.

The Xccela bus interface will help Xilinx Versal ACAP increase boot and configuration performance eight times more than older-generation FPGA platforms.

With higher levels of AI inference capabilities being incorporated into ADAS in autonomous vehicles, Micron’s Xccela will enhance Versal ACAP’s system configuration power to address ADAS application requirements.

Efforts in AI and Memory Solutions

Micron’s zeal to remain at the top of the game in booming markets like AI and ML, and memory solutions is commendable.

To this end, the company’s long-standing partnership with Intel (INTC - Free Report) to develop new memory technologies is long documented. This collaboration yielded the densest 3D NAND technology.

Also, last year, the company signed a three-year deal with CERN openlab to provide CERN with advanced next-generation memory solutions to boost ML capabilities for sophisticated physics experiments conducted at laboratories.

Notably, in January this year, Micron’s LPDRAM, Xccela NOR Flash and e.MMC memory solutions were adopted by Mobileye to expedite the development of ADAS capabilities in Level 1–5 self-driving vehicles.

Moreover, in the same month, Micron’s automotive-grade LPDDR4X memory devices were adopted by Qualcomm to build the next-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon Automotive Cockpit Platforms.

Notably, Micron also supplies its memory solutions to NVIDIA (NVDA - Free Report) , which is a dominant player in the autonomous vehicle technology market.

We expect that the continued flow of partnerships and deals will help Micron to boost its growth.
