Apple (AAPL - Free Report) unveiled MacOS Catalina, the latest version of its desktop operating system software for iMac, Mac, MacBook and MacBook Pro devices on Oct 8.

MacOS Catalina comes with new apps and features. The latest update replaces the 18-year old iTunes app with new Music, Podcasts, and TV apps that offer similar functionality to iTunes.

The new Apple TV will provide access to Apple TV+ and movies with support for 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos. Additionally, the music app comes with Apple Music and iTunes library of 50 million songs.

Apple’s Feature Updates on MacOS Catalina

Apple Mac’s new Sidecar feature turns iPad into a secondary display for Mac. Users can turn the iPad into a drawing tablet will the help of newly launched Apple Pencil when using apps like Photoshop and Illustrator.

Additionally, the Screen Time feature is now available on Mac in addition to iPhones and iPads in macOS Catalina. Users can track device usage across apps and websites. Downtime and App Limits provide better time control to users.

Moreover, Apple has added Mac Catalyst technology for developers to easily port iPad apps over to Mac.

Further, users can transcribe spoken text and edit text through voice with the help of a new voice control feature that uses latest Siri speech recognition technology to control Mac.

MacOS Catalina also comes with feature updates to Mails, Notes, Reminders, Photos and Safari to create a better user experience on Mac.

User Security Updates

Notably, Apple’s new Gatekeeper technology will allow only trusted software to run on Mac among other user document accessibility features.

Additionally, Apple has also enhanced security for Mac devices with T2 chip, which will now support Activation Lock.

Apple Watch can also be used to approve security prompts for passwords. We believe the new apps and technology will give users greater control over data access and increase user engagement.

Position in the PC market

Apple’s focus on strengthening features and apps of its Mac offerings is expected to boost its market share in the near term. The iPhone-maker is currently not a major player in the personal computing devices market.

Per an IDC report, though Apple’s personal computing devices market share increased 9.6% year over year to 6.3% second-quarter 2019, it lags Lenovo (LNVGY - Free Report) , HP (HPE - Free Report) and Dell (DELL - Free Report) , which have market share of 25.1%, 23.7% and 17.9%, respectively.

Notably, in the last reported quarter, Apple Mac unit sales increased 10.7% year over year to $5.82 billion and accounted for 10.8% of total sales.

We believe that Apple’s ability to introduce apps and features while addressing security breaches and other issues will help it attract and retain customers in an increasingly competitive environment.

However, per a recent Forbes report, some consumers have major issues post MacOS Catalina update. The company has advised affected consumers to refrain from further update until the issues are resolved.
