National Vision provides budget-friendly eye exams, eyeglasses and contact lenses to low-income consumers and aims at making eye care and eyewear reasonable for all Americans. As of fiscal 2023 end, the company operated through a diverse portfolio of 1,413 retail stores across five brands and 13 consumer websites. Comparable store sales growth and new store openings are key drivers of the company’s net revenues.
National Vision boasts a wide distribution network with a 118,000-square-foot distribution center in Georgia and also presently includes a 52,000-square-foot distribution center in Ohio. The company uses third-party carriers to transport all products from the distribution centers to the destination.
National Vision operates through two reportable segments. The details are as follows:
Owned & host segment: This segment includes the company’s owned brands, namely, America’s Best and Eyeglass World along with its partner brands, Vista Optical locations in select Fred Meyer stores. National Vision also provides affordable eye care products and services to American military service members. Comparable store sales growth for 2023 for America’s Best and Military were up 4% and 3% respectively, whereas Eyeglass World dropped 1% and Fred Meyer decreased 4.6%.
Legacy segment: The segment comprises National Vision’s 28-year-old strategic collaboration with Walmart to operate Vision Centers in certain Walmart stores, which terminates on Feb 23, 2024. The comparable store sales growth for this segment was down 0.5% in 2023.
In addition, National Vision has its managed care business, which relates to vision care programs and associated benefits provided by stand-alone vision insurance entities, healthcare plans and government programs.
