BlackBerry (BBRY) & Timex Group Sign Patent License Deal

BlackBerry Limited recently announced that it has inked a patent license agreement with Timex Group, a leading watch making company. Per the deal, BlackBerry will receive on-going royalty payments from Timex. Other terms of the agreement have not been divulged.

With terms of the agreement kept under wraps, the extent of the effect on BlackBerry’s balance sheet remains unclear. Also, unlike its previous agreements, the company made no mention of what this patent stands for.

Notably, BlackBerry’s portfolio consists of approximately 40,000 patents and applications worldwide, covering a wide range of technologies including wireless communications, networking infrastructure, acoustics and the likes.

Other Prominent Deals

Last month, BlackBerry signed an agreement with Appdome, the first cloud hub for mobile app integration. The contract would allow codeless integration of secure voice, video and messaging functions.

In 2016, BlackBerry reached a deal with Ford (F - Free Report) to send some of its software developers to the car giant to help work on driverless car technology.

In 2015, BlackBerry entered into a long-term patent cross-licensing agreement with Cisco Systems (CSCO - Free Report) . Per the deal, which covered their respective products and technologies, BlackBerry obtained a license fee from Cisco. The agreement allowed the companies to emphasize on innovation and technical cooperation and enhanced creation of world-class products and services for customers without any hindrance of patent disputes.

Earlier in May this year, the company received a boost from Qualcomm (QCOM - Free Report) , which reached an $815-million deal to pay BlackBerry’s past-due royalty fees. This repayment plan helped set up BlackBerry’s stock buyback of 31 million common shares.
