Key Takeaways

  • Walmart opened its fifth next-generation fulfillment center in Stockton to expand West Coast deliveries.
  • Advanced automation reduces fulfillment steps from 12 to five, boosting order-processing efficiency.
  • Walmart's U.S. e-commerce sales rose 24% in fiscal Q2 2027, while Marketplace sales jumped 52%.

Walmart Inc. (WMT - Free Report) continues to strengthen its omnichannel capabilities through investments in supply-chain automation, technology and faster delivery services. These initiatives are supporting e-commerce growth and enhancing customer convenience. Reinforcing these efforts, Walmart recently opened its fifth next-generation fulfillment center in Stockton, CA, to expand delivery capabilities across the West Coast.

The new facility spans more than 900,000 square feet and is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs. Strategically located in California's Central Valley, the center expands Walmart's fulfillment capacity closer to West Coast customers. This should help the retailer improve delivery speed, strengthen order-processing capabilities and support growing online demand.

The facility incorporates advanced automation, machine learning and a high-density storage system to streamline operations. Its technology reduces the traditional 12-step fulfillment process to five steps, potentially improving productivity and order-handling efficiency. Together with Walmart's broader fulfillment network, these advanced facilities are expected to enable next- or two-day shipping coverage for 95% of the U.S. population.

The expansion aligns with Walmart's strong digital momentum. In second-quarter fiscal 2027, Walmart U.S. e-commerce sales increased 24%, while Marketplace sales grew 52%. Nearly half of Marketplace sales flowed through Walmart Fulfillment Services. More than 50% of the company's e-commerce fulfillment volume was processed through automated facilities, reflecting progress in supply-chain modernization.

The Stockton investment should further strengthen Walmart's fulfillment network, support Marketplace growth and improve operational efficiency over time. However, higher capital spending and related depreciation expenses remain important considerations as the retailer continues expanding its automated infrastructure.
