Zacks Initiates Coverage of APT With Neutral Recommendation

Read MoreHide Full Article

Zacks Investment Research recently initiated coverage of Alpha Pro Tech, Ltd. (APT - Free Report) with a "Neutral" recommendation, highlighting strong growth in its Disposable Protective Apparel business, improving operating efficiency and a debt-free balance sheet. However, rising input costs, tariff uncertainty and persistent weakness in residential construction could limit the company's near-term growth prospects.

Alpha Pro Tech manufactures disposable protective apparel, infection control products and construction weatherization materials. The company's investment outlook reflects opportunities from strengthening apparel demand, planned price increases and expanded manufacturing capabilities, balanced against challenges in its housing-sensitive Building Supply business.

Disposable Protective Apparel has emerged as a key growth driver. Segment revenues increased 24.9% year over year to $7 million in the second quarter of 2026, supported by stronger demand from major distribution partners. Disposable protective garment sales rose 29%, benefiting from improved distribution activity and higher selling prices.

The research report highlights several key factors that could drive Alpha Pro Tech's growth. Operating performance also showed encouraging signs. Excluding tariff refunds, second-quarter operating income climbed 29.8% year over year to $1.73 million, while the operating margin expanded to 9.3% from 8%. The company's ability to control operating expenses despite rising sales contributed to improved profitability.

Alpha Pro Tech's financial position provides another advantage. As of June 30, 2026, the company held $18.9 million in cash, maintained a debt-free balance sheet and reported working capital of $51 million. Its ongoing share repurchase program and manufacturing joint venture in India further support financial and operational flexibility.

However, potential investors should consider certain risks outlined in the report. Higher resin prices, transportation expenses and tariffs pressured the gross margin in the first half of 2026. Although management plans price increases in the third quarter to recover costs, their effectiveness remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, Building Supply revenues inched up 0.5% in the first half of 2026, reflecting subdued housing activity. Elevated mortgage rates and affordability concerns could continue to restrain construction-related demand. Dependence on major distribution partners and uncertainty surrounding non-recurring tariff refunds add further risks.

From a valuation perspective, APT trades at 7.27 times trailing 12-month EV/EBITDA, below the Zacks subindustry average of 7.96 times. Its shares have gained 19.3% over the past year, outperforming the subindustry's 30% decline.
