Company Summary
Triton International Limited was formed following the Jul 12, 2016 all-stock merger between Triton Container International Limited and TAL International Group. Triton International, based in Hamilton, Bermuda, is the largest lessor of intermodal containers (large steel boxes that are used for transporting freight by ship/rail/truck). The company also focuses on leasing chassis, which are used for transporting containers.
With a large-scale global presence, Triton International offers leasing services through 19 offices and 3 independent offices located in 16 countries. The company has an in-house equipment sales group responsible for monitoring the sale of its used containers and chassis from the equipment leasing fleet. Additionally, the group buys and sells used and new containers as well as chassis acquired from third parties.
Majority of the company’s revenues are derived from its equipment leasing unit. Under this segment, Triton International aims at leasing its containers to shipping line customers through contractual lease arrangements that are long-term as well as short-term in nature.
Apart from chasis, Triton International leases other equipments like dry freight containers, refrigerated containers, special containers and tank containers. Most of the leasing revenues are derived from international (Asia, Europe, the Americas and other international areas) containers.
Triton International's other segment is equipment trading, which was acquired as part of the July 2016 merger. Under this segment, the company purchases containers from shipping line customers and other sellers. Subsequently, the company resells these containers. Meanwhile, Trading margins depend on the number of units purchased and resold, selling prices, selling and administrative costs as well as other factors.
In 2021, leasing revenues at Triton International came in at $1.53 billion, up 17.3% year over year due to coronavirus-led weak container demand. Bulk (96.5%) of the leasing revenues in 2021 came from operating leases. Remaining leasing revenues came from finance leases. The company’s total equipment fleet (leasing+trading) in units at the end of 2021 stood at 4,260,503.
Triton International’s fiscal year coincides with the calendar year.
