AECOM to Apply Microsoft HoloLens in Construction Projects
Read MoreHide Full Article
AECOM (ACM - Free Report) is collaborating with Trimble Navigation Limited (TRMB - Free Report) , to apply Microsoft Corporation’s (MSFT - Free Report) HoloLens “mixed-reality” technology in engineering and construction projects. Aecom stated that this project will be the first commercial implementation of the HoloLens technology in the engineering and construction industries.
AECOM and Trimble have launched a pilot program under which they will use Microsoft HoloLens augmented reality headsets in projects across three continents.
The technology aims to advance 3D modeling to the next level, by allowing designers and engineers to explore the complex construction projects as if they were 3D models placed on a table.
Trimble’s pioneering mixed-reality solutions will help AECOM to supply 3D engineering models into the HoloLens world. Using a lightweight headset, the HoloLens will enable users to interact with virtual objects by inserting holograms of 3D objects into the user’s view.
The ability to study complex structures in this kind of mixed-reality environment has huge implications for the field and can accelerate the engineering design process to a great extent. In fact, the technology offers higher clarity in the design review process as well, and allows team members in different locations to simultaneously explore the same holographic projections, thus improving efficiency and enabling effective collaboration during the design process.
As part of the Pilot Program, Aecom will deploy HoloLens devices in London, Denver and Hong Kong. The technology will enable engineers and architects in these different locations to access the same holographic models at once, by linking their interactions through the Internet provided by Trimble solutions.
AECOM and Trimble have applied this revolutionary technology to the built environment at the Serpentine Galleries.
AECOM currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). A better-ranked stock in the same space is Willdan Group, Inc. (WLDN - Free Report) , carrying a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
