Republic Services Introduces Ash Metal Recovery Facility
Read MoreHide Full Article
Republic Services, Inc. (RSG - Free Report) , a waste management company in the U.S., along with Lab USA recently unveiled a state-of-the-art ash metal recovery facility at the Roosevelt Regional Landfill. The facility will process all newly delivered ash to the Roosevelt Landfill as well as the existing ash to reclaim metals previously lost through traditional methods of resource recovery.
Lab USA
Headquartered in Green Bay, WI, Lab USA is a specialized firm that works toward environment preservation across U.S., Germany and France. It specializes in reducing air, water and soil emissions.
It offers state-of-the-art technology, in association with the Best Available Technologies framework. Its solutions enable customers to boost profitability of their thermal plants and recover metal from incineration bottom-ash, thereby reducing the impact of industrial activities on the environment.
This highly innovative facility will allow retrieval of metals found in ash. Once recovered, the metal will be recycled and shipped to manufacturers to create new metal products.
To combat environmental challenges, companies are required to innovate solutions. The growing demand to preserve the natural environment has given rise to innovative landfill and processing technologies.
The facility is estimated to recover and recycle over 46,200 tons of ferrous metals and 42,900 tons of non-ferrous metals. Ferrous metals are basically metals containing iron such as steel, stainless steel and cast iron, whereas non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, copper, lead and tin do not possess magnetic quality.
Environment pollution is a growing concern in today’s industrialized world and, keeping that in mind, the company has taken up this initiative to separate metal from normal municipal waste.
Roosevelt Landfill
The Roosevelt Landfill converts methane gas (CH4) into renewable energy source utilizing the waste collected from municipalities across Washington. Currently, the landfill works with Klickitat Public Utility District to produce sufficient energy to power up to 30,000 local households annually.
The volume of metals recovered and recycled through the new facility at the Roosevelt Landfill will have a positive impact on the environment. Per the American Iron and Steel Institute, energy consumption of recycling iron measures up to 20% lower than that of mining and processing iron from natural resources. According to the International Copper Association, energy savings from recycling copper is roughly 60% higher than that of mining copper from natural resources.
The company’s plan of recovering 46,200 tons of ferrous metals from this facility is equal to constructing around six Eiffel Towers. The anticipated retrieval of 4,290 tons of copper is equivalent to making approximately 24.9 million linear feet of half-inch copper piping used to transport water to households.
Reclaiming these metals from municipal waste that were previously lost through traditional techniques will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
This new facility will not only be environmentally friendly but will also give Republic Services an edge over its peers. The company will be well positioned to expand its client base across the world.
Republic Services carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Some better-ranked stocks include US Ecology, Inc. , Nuverra Environmental Solutions, Inc. and Harsco Corporation . All three stocks carry a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
