The bulk of the Q2 earnings reports are out and we now have a fair idea about the overall performance this quarter. According to our Earnings Trends report, as of Jul 29, as many as 317 S&P 500 members have reported their quarterly results.
This time the performance indicators are a tad better than the last quarter. Though consolidated earnings are down 3.3% from the prior-year period on 0.9% decline in revenues, the decline is lower than the first quarter. Of the 317 companies, 72.9% have surpassed earnings expectations while 53.6% beat sales estimates.
Moreover, results from the tech sector are significantly better as we can see from the performance of the 84.6% of the sector’s total market cap in the S&P 500 index. So far, 83.3% of the tech companies have reported better-than-expected earnings while 77.8% have topped revenue expectations. In fact, the sector witnessed a 2.1% upside on a year-over-year basis in revenues, though earnings declined 0.9%.
With a few tech companies left to report, let’s have a look at the Computer Network industry within the tech space as it has been relatively strong amid a turbulent market.
Three computer network providers are set to release their quarterly numbers on Aug 3, namely Extreme Networks Inc. (EXTR - Free Report) , iPass Inc. and Radcom Ltd.(RDCM - Free Report) .
Extreme Networks Inc. has an impressive earnings surprise history. It has surpassed earnings estimates in each of the trailing four quarters, resulting in an average positive earnings surprise of 147.92%. In the last quarter, the company broke even. For this quarter, this Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) company has an Earnings ESP of 0.00% as both the Most Accurate estimate and the Zacks Consensus Estimate are pegged at 6 cents.
iPass Inc., a software-enabled enterprise connectivity services provider, has been gaining momentum ahead of its earnings release. Over the past one month, its shares have surged over 20% compared with a gain of only about 4% in the S&P 500 index. However, the company is a relatively small player in the market, which makes it difficult to speculate about the forthcoming results. iPass carries a Zacks Rank #3.
Radcom Ltd. has missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate in three out of the last four quarters and has an average four-quarter negative surprise of 126.67. Estimates for this Zacks Rank #3 stock have remained stable of late. Radcom has an Earnings ESP of 0.00%. The combination of 0.00% ESP and a Zacks Rank #3 makes it difficult to predict a surprise in the to-be reported quarter.
