Facebook Tweaks News Feed Layout to Make it "Informative"

Read MoreHide Full Article

Facebook Inc. has yet again changed its news feed layout to make it more informative. Going forward, while ranking the feed, in addition to posts from family and friends, Facebook will also give priority to stories that are informative for users.

The company didn’t exactly discuss the changes to the algorithm but in a blog post, the company mentioned “with this update, we are creating a new ranking signal to predict what is most informative to you, so those stories appear higher in your feed.”

Facebook said the change is based on surveys made worldwide under its Feed Quality program. “We ask people through this Feed Quality Program to rate their experience. For stories that people rate highly, we then ask them why they enjoyed seeing those particular stories. Generally, we’ve found people find stories informative if they are related to their interests, if they engage people in broader discussions and if they contain news about the world around them.”

This should bring some relief to digital publishers who were startled when Facebook decided to give first priority to posts from family and friends while ranking the feed. These publishers use Facebook as a platform to expand their readership and generate additional revenues.

Recently, the company also addressed the issue of clickbait. The company said that it is implementing a system to update the news feed that can identify commonly used phrases in clickbait headlines that will reduce distribution of spam posts that generally lure users to click but have nothing interesting to offer.

However, Facebook was quick to add that most users won’t see much change but a few could witness increase/decrease in referral traffic.

Though Facebook started off as a social media platform, the company, in a very short span of time, has become a leading name in the tech space along with giants like Apple Inc (AAPL - Free Report) , Amazon.com Inc (AMZN - Free Report) and Alphabet (GOOGL - Free Report) .
