Raytheon (RTN) Gets $104M Contract for RQ-4 Global Hawk
Read MoreHide Full Article
Raytheon Company received a subcontract valued $104 million to upgrade the ground segment for the U.S. Air Force RQ-4 Global Hawk autonomous aircraft. The company has joined Northrop Grumman Corp. (NOC) as the ground integrator for Global Hawk contracts.
The maker of Global Hawk, Northrop Grumman provides the U.S. Air Force high-altitude, long-endurance platform used to gather a variety of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, data. Raytheon, on the other hand, provides upgraded version of ground controls to modernize capabilities, safety and cybersecurity of Global Hawk operations worldwide.
Under the contract, Raytheon is entitled to equip the mission control stations for the Northrop-built RQ-4 Global Hawk unmanned aerial system with open architecture that will work to facilitate the addition of new platforms and mission payloads by the service branch.
The company will also provide cybersecurity platforms and set up building-based mission control facilities at Beale Air Force Base in California and Grand Forks AFB in North Dakota.
Work on the modernized ground control stations is slated to complete in 2019.
Notably, Global Hawk is an unmanned aircraft intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance system capable of flying high altitudes and long hours.
Global Hawk gained massive popularity mainly on its ability to transform into an operational weapons system as and when required. It was not only used by the Air Force for maintaining overseas surveillance but has also been employed extensively by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (“NASA”) for scientific research missions.
