Tesla's New 100 kWh Battery Makes Model S Fastest Car
Read MoreHide Full Article
Tesla Motors, Inc. (TSLA - Free Report) has launched new versions of Model S and Model X with 100 kWh batteries. Prior to this, the largest battery it offered was 90 kWh.
Model S P100D
The Model S P100D can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds (when using the Ludicrous mode), which makes it the fastest car currently in production. Two other cars, the LaFerrari and the Porsche 918 Spyder, had faster acceleration. However, both were limited edition vehicles that are no longer in production. Moreover, these were highly expensive, two-seater cars, while Model S P100D is a comparatively cheaper pure electric, all-wheel drive vehicle that can accommodate five adults and two children.
Apart from being the third fastest accelerating production car ever manufactured, the Model S P100D also has the longest range among all electric vehicles in production as of now. The larger battery gives it a range of 315 miles on the EPA cycle and 613 km on the EU cycle.
The price of Model S P100D starts at $134,500.
Model X P100D
The upgraded battery pack has made Model X faster than ever before. While it was already the fastest SUV, the Model X P100D with Ludicrous mode is even faster. It can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds. The range of the SUV has also increased to 289 miles EPA estimated and 542 km on the EU cycle.
The price of Model X P100D starts at $135,500.
Option to Upgrade P90D Models
Bearing the existing customers in mind, Tesla has announced an option to upgrade the battery packs of existing P90D Ludicrous vehicles to 10kWh. Customers who have not received delivery of their P90D Ludicrous vehicles can upgrade for a charge of $10,000, while already delivered vehicles can be upgraded for $20,000.
