These 6 Retailers are Axing On-Call Shift Scheduling

Read MoreHide Full Article

On Tuesday, six national retailers have agreed to stop using on-call shift scheduling after an inquiry by a group of state attorneys general from across the country.

The state attorneys general said that David’s Tea Inc. , Carter’s Inc. (CRI - Free Report) , Aeropostale Inc. , PacSun, Zumiez Inc. (ZUMZ - Free Report) , and media giant Walt Disney Co. (DIS - Free Report) have all ceased using the practice, which requires employees to be prepared to come in for a work shift, but could find out at the last minute that they don’t have to clock in. About 50,000 workers nationwide will be benefitted.

Additionally, Carter’s, Disney, David’s Tea, and Zumiez said they will commit to give their employees their work schedules at least one week in advance of the work week, said the state officials.

"On-call shifts are not a business necessity and should be a thing of the past. People should not have to keep the day open, arrange for child care, and give up other opportunities without being compensated for their time," said Eric T. Schneiderman, the New York attorney general, in a statement.

Tuesday’s just-in-time-for-the-holidays announcement expands on a similar agreement reached last year to end on-call shift scheduling between state attorneys general and retailers including Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF - Free Report) , Gap Inc. , Urban Outfitters Inc. (URBN - Free Report) , J.Crew Group Inc., Pier 1 Imports Inc. , and L Brands Inc. (LB - Free Report) .
