Inside the Headlines

Comps at Cheesecake Factory restaurants increased 1.1%, same as the year-ago quarter growth, which is lower than the last-quarter growth of 1.7%. Menu price increase of 2.5% and positive mix of 0.4% drove comps, partly offset by a 1.8% decline in traffic.

Cost of sales ratio decreased 60 basis points (bps) year over year to 23.2%. This was primarily attributable to lower seafood, groceries, dairy and meat costs, partially offset by an unfavourable comparison for poultry. Moreover, labor expense ratio was 33.6%, 80 bps higher year over year owing to high hourly wages.

General and administrative expenses accounted for 6.4% of revenues in the fourth quarter as compared to the prior-year quarter level of 6.8%. Also, pre-opening expenses were roughly $7 million, down 1.5% year over year.

2016 Results

Cheesecake Factory’s full-year adjusted earnings of $2.83 came in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Meanwhile, it increased 19.4% from the year-ago quarter figure of $2.37 on the back of higher revenues.

Full-year revenues of $2.28 billion topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.27 billion and increased 8.3% year over year.
