From a tech perspective, we can’t ignore the fact that Amazon (AMZN - Free Report) has already presented an idea for revolutionizing brick-and-mortar shopping. Indeed, the company is currently testing its “checkout free” concept, Amazon Go, in Seattle.

This store utilizes several interesting pieces of tech, including sensor fusion and deep learning, to keep track of what you are buying. All of your items are added to a virtual cart as you shop, and you simply walk out the door when you are done. Later, you are charged on your Amazon account.

While we likely won’t see checkout free shopping in a Whole Foods near us anytime soon, the idea that Amazon could bring its Internet of Things and AI research and technology into the local grocery store is exciting.

Additionally, Amazon—a company known for learning from its user data—is about to learn even more about its shoppers. The Whole Foods deal really has several layers to dig through, and it’s important to analyze the merger from several perspectives.
