Honda Motor Co., Ltd. (HMC - Free Report) is set to unveil a new five-passenger gas-electric hybrid sedan, Insight, at the Detroit auto show next month, per an AP report. The Japanese automaker is of the opinion that the compact car will offer mileage on par with other hybrids.

According to the Edmunds.com, sales of electric and hybrid cars in the United States will hit a record high in 2018. The auto buying site also predicts that fully electric vehicles, plug-in rechargeable hybrids and traditional gas-electric hybrids will account for 4.4% of the market in 2018, up from a prior estimate of 3.2%. The rapidly growing electric vehicles market might have prompted the Japanese auto giant to join the electric vehicles race in a big way.
Shares of the company have outperformed the industry it belongs to in the last three months. The company’s shares increased 15.3% compared with the industry‘s growth of 7.1%.
