The company was founded in 1907. Its identity changed to Baker Hughes, a GE Company in 2017, after merging with the oil and gas units of General Electric Co. In the combined entity, General Electric had a controlling interest of 62.5%. Following a restructuring move in September 2019, General Electric ceased to hold more than 50% stake in the entity. In October 2019, the company eliminated references of General Electric from its name and started trading as Baker Hughes Company. Currently, General Electric owns around 38% stake in the company.
The operations of Baker Hughes span across 120 countries. The oilfield service player reorganized its company from four segments to two operating segments. Effective Oct 1, 2022, the two operating segments are Oilfield Services and Equipment (OFSE), and Industrial & Energy Technology (IET).
The company merged the Oilfield Services segment with the Oilfield Equipment segment to form the OFSE segment, and combined the Turbomachinery & Process Solutions segment with the Digital Solutions segment to create the IET segment.
OFSE: Through this segment, Baker Hughes helps customers conduct operations, starting from drilling and evaluation to completion and production of oil and gas wells. Through 2023, the segment contributed to 62.5% of total revenues.
IET: This unit helps Baker Hughes serve customers with power-generation applications, flow and process control activities, refining and other industrial works. The operating unit contributed to 37.5% of total revenue in 2023.
