Company Summary
Toronto, Canada-based Franco-Nevada Corporation operates as a gold-focused royalty and stream company with additional interests in silver, platinum group metals ("PGM"), oil & gas and other resource assets. Franco-Nevada has a diversified portfolio of 54 producing assets consisting of four larger cash-flowing assets — Antamina, Antapaccay, Candelaria and Cobre Panama and interests in 41 advanced assets (which are not yet producing) and interests in 223 exploration stage mining properties. The company also holds interest in 55 energy assets. The company generates around 86% of revenues from the Americas (Latin America 49%, the United States 18% and Canada 19%) and 14% from the rest of the world.
Franco-Nevada actively manages its portfolio to maintain a focus on precious metals and a diversity of revenue sources with a target of not more than 20% from energy. In 2020, 91% of revenues were earned from gold and gold equivalents (gold being 70%, silver 11%, PGMs 8%, and other mining 2%) and 9% from Energy assets.
Franco-Nevada acquired 14.7% of Vale's outstanding Participating Debentures and accumulated a 9.9% equity investment in Labrador Iron Ore Royalty Corporation. Iron ore is expected to contribute between 5-6% of total revenues in 2021 and 4-5% in 2025. Franco-Nevada's revenue mix is expected to remain greater than 80% precious metals through 2025.
Franco-Nevada's revenue is generated from various forms of agreements, ranging from net smelter return royalties (“NSR”), streams, net profits interests, net royalty interests, working interests and other types of arrangements. The company does not operate mines, develop projects or conduct exploration. Franco-Nevada's business model is focused on managing and growing its portfolio of royalties and streams.
It provides investors with gold price and exploration optionality while limiting exposure to many of the risks associated with operating companies. The company has a perpetual discovery option over large areas of geologically prospective lands and does not have to make additional capital requirements other than the initial investment. Franco-Nevada has a high-margin business that can generate cash through the entire commodity cycle.
