Total system generation as of Dec 31, 2023, was 11,938 thousand megawatt hours (MWh), out of which 54.8% came from hydro-electric plants, 20.8% from coal-fired plants and 24.4% from natural gas-fired plants. Idaho Power owns 4,762 miles of high-voltage transmission lines and 29,714 miles of distribution lines. Idaho Power expects retail sales growth of 5.5% over the next five years.
Total power supply in 2023 was 17,610 thousand MWhs, up from 17,141 thousand MWhs in 2022. Along with owned generation, the company relies on long-term power purchase agreements to supply energy to end consumers. Its service area covers about 24,000 square miles. In 2023, the Electric Utility segment contributed 99.8% to total revenues, and off-system sales and the Other segment accounted for only 0.2%.
Another subsidiary of IDACORP is IDACORP Financial Services, Inc. (IFS). This subsidiary invests in affordable housing and other real estate investments, which generate returns primarily through tax credits and accelerated tax depreciation benefits. The company is not investing any further. Rather, it is and will continue to manage prior investments. Ida-West Energy Company (Ida-West) is another utility that operates small hydroelectric generation projects and has 50% ownership in nine hydroelectric projects, with a total generating capacity of 45 megawatt (MW).
