As per a recent report by PCMag, Comcast Corporation’s (CMCSA - Free Report) Xfinity broadband Internet speeds outpaced that of Verizon Communications Inc.’s (VZ - Free Report) FiOS hi-speed broadband service. However, both the Internet Service Providers (ISP) lag Alphabet Inc.’s (GOOG - Free Report) Google Fiber offering. Interestingly, earlier this June, Verizon was asked to alter the FiOS commercial by advertisement watchdog, the National Advertising Review Board (NARB), following a complaint by Comcast. Furthermore, this is the first time that Comcast has surpassed Verizon in an Internet service speed test.
Who Offers the Fastest Internet?
As per a recent test conducted by the Federal Communications Commission, Comcast’s Internet service outperformed Verizon’s FiOS offering. Moreover, as per the PCMag report, Comcast’s Internet recorded speeds of 49.6207 Mbps which just about managed to inch past Verizon’s FiOS service’s 49.6201 Mbps.
The Speed Race
As faster speeds are much in demand, owing to innovation in services such as cloud computing and Internet of things (IoT), ISPs are looking to expand and improve Internet networks by increasing their fiber footprint across the country. Google Fiber is targeting to foray into more markets while Verizon has announced plans to expand its FiOS service in markets like Boston. Verizon recently vended parts of its FiOS operations to Frontier Communications Inc. . Comcast has also been trying to upgrade its existing network to the DOCSIS 3.1 standard that will allow it to provide Gigabit Internet connections.
While Verizon may lose the speed race to Comcast, it is by no means a devastating defeat. From a broader perspective, the healthy competition to upgrade and expand the Internet infrastructure spells good times for the country ahead.
Both Verizon and Comcast currently carry a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
