Read MoreHide Full Article

In a bid to further push itself into the online video streaming space, Amazon.com Inc.’s (AMZN - Free Report) film production division Amazon Studios will premiere the second season of the acclaimed comedy – One Mississippi – next year.

The comedy will be shown exclusively on Prime Video via the Amazon Video app on TVs and connected devices like mobile, Fire TV, and online at www.amazon.com/thegrandtour. The show will premiere in 2017 in the U.S., UK, Germany, Austria and Japan.

About the Series

One Mississippi is created by Tig Notaro and Diablo Cody, and produced by FX Productions. The series humorously explores Tig’s family and digs into her past, after she returns to her hometown in Mississippi on the sudden death of her mother.

The stars in the comedy series include Noah Harpster, John Rothman and Stephanie Allynne. Notaro, Cody, Robin, M. Blair Breard, Dave Becky and Louis C.K. are the executive producers for the second season.

Joe Lewis, head of Comedy and Drama for Amazon Studios said that making a show as comic and tragic as One Mississippi is a risk but pulling it off with such intelligence and nuance is rare. He also added, “We’re grateful for the audience response and we’re excited to bring them more of Tig and Kate’s brilliance in season two.”

Amazon Rises to the Occasion

The original content space is extremely crowded and dominated by Netflix (NFLX - Free Report) . Other players that are trying to their boost presence in this space include Dish Networks' SlingTV, Comcast's (CMCSA - Free Report) NBC Universal, AT&T's DirecTV Now, Alphabet's rumored Google Unplugged service, Twenty-First Century Fox, Hulu, HBO,  Time Warner and Disney.

So, it’s up to Amazon to compete against them with successful ventures of its own. This new series is expected to do the job for Amazon, leveraging on the popularity of the star cast and the success it achieved in the first season.

Notably, Amazon has been increasing its spending on original TV shows and movies, one of the main reasons behind its third-quarter earnings miss. CFO Brian Olsavsky has already said that the company has increased its spending on video content and marketing by twofold in the second half of this year from last year.

Currently, Amazon carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.
