Tinder Launches Desktop Version of Its Popular Dating App

Good news for singles who want to mingle. Tinder is launching a web based version of its popular mobile dating service called Tinder Online.

In a blog post, Tinder calls the service “a fun, new web experience and your English professor’s worst nightmare.” The post further reflects on the utility of Tinder Online by saying, “Mobile phones not allowed in class? Just fire up your laptop and swipe incognito. Cubicle life got you down? Now you can toggle between spreadsheets and Super Likes in a flash. Not Enough Storage? Not a problem. Don’t let life get in the way of your Tinder game. With Tinder Online, you can swipe anywhere in the world you have an internet connection.”

To use the dating service, users will have to login through their Facebook accounts.  The desktop version will be similar to the mobile one. However, the only exception is that users can now see the profile of their match as they chat.

Tinder Online is currently being tested in countries like Indonesia, Italy, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Philippines, and Sweden, with plans of worldwide launch in the near future. Tinder also added that given that Facebook too has restricted access in some parts of the world, it is also testing ability to login through SMS directly from phones.

Tinder, launched in 2012, is a location based dating service. It is basically labeled as more of a hook up/sexting app. The company has been trying to deal with its image issues and has been working on making the service more socially adequate. A few months back, it launched a service for Apple TV. Founder and Chairman, Sean Rad was quoted by media reports saying, “Since its launch, friends have been swiping for each other on Tinder. Tinder on Apple TV represents the next step in that evolution.” Though not judging, but like many other analysts, we also echo similar sentiments as to how anyone can be comfortable finding “dates” while watching TV in the living room with family around.

Over the past few days, Tinder has also updated its app to include more gender options like transgender. Per media reports, the update is available only in the U.S, the U.K and Canada and is aimed at making the service more inclusive. Reports further add that Tinder is likely to face hurdles when it tries to roll out this feature in other “not so liberal parts” of the world.

Notwithstanding its current reputation, it is indisputable that Tinder is highly addictive. The company has a presence in about 196 countries with reportedly over 50 million users (who spend an average of 90 minutes on the app and keep coming back at least 11 times a day.)
