AT&T Adds Free HBO To Its Unlimited Plus Wireless Plan

Read MoreHide Full Article

On Wednesday, wireless carrier AT&T (T - Free Report) announced that it will be bundling a subscription of HBO with its Unlimited Plus wireless service at no extra cost. This new perk will be available to all subscribers, and the company hopes it will drive new customers who are fans of HBO programming like Game of Thrones and the new smash hit Big Little Lies. The promotion goes into effect April 6.

AT&T’s Unlimited Plus plans begin at $90 per month for one line, and includes unlimited data, talk, and text, as well as HD video and mobile Wi-Fi hotpot access of 10 gigabytes per month per smartphone, and now, HBO. Speeds, however, slow after 22 gigabytes of data are used per line.

Customers who currently subscribe to HBO through an AT&T video service will now have it included in their plan for free, while those who subscribe to an AT&T video service but not HBO will automatically receive access to the premium channel.

This is not the first-time AT&T has used HBO as a way to entice customers. Before, with DirecTV Now, the wireless company would offer HBO for only an extra $5 per month, which is well under the price for the streaming service HBO Now—this service goes for $15 a month—or any add-on available from rival services like Sling TV.

In addition, AT&T is incentivizing subscribers with $25 in monthly video credit toward DirecTV, the internet-delivered DirecTV Now, or U-verse TV, and this credit remains so long as customers remain on the Unlimited Plus wireless plan.

AT&T is on the verge of purchasing of HBO’s parent company, media giant Time Warner , in an eyebrow-raising $85 billion deal that was announced last year. AT&T is currently a #3 (Hold) on the Zacks Rank.
