HCA Holdings Inc. (HCA - Free Report) reported first-quarter 2017 adjusted earnings of $1.74 per share, which met the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Earnings grew 1.8% year over year.

HCA Holdings posted net revenues of $10.62 billion, which fell short of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $10.69 billion. Revenues were, however, up 3.5% year over year.

For the quarter ended Mar 31, 2017, the provision for doubtful accounts declined 3.8% year over year to $760 million.

Quarter Details

During the first quarter, total expenses increased 4.3% year over year to $9.56 billion due to higher salary and benefits, supplies, other operating expenses, depreciation and amortization cost.

Same facility equivalent admissions and admissions increased 1.6% and 1.2% year over year.

Same facility emergency room visits increased 1.1% year over year.
On a same facility basis, inpatient surgeries increased 0.9%, while outpatient surgeries declined 0.5% year over year.

Same facility revenue per equivalent admission increased 1.7% year over year.

As of Mar 31, 2017, HCA Holdings operated 171 hospitals and 118 freestanding surgery centers.

Financial Update

HCA Holdings exited the first quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $753 million, total debt of $31.3 billion, and total assets of $33.795 billion.

Cash flows from operating activities totaled $1.280 billion compared with $1.399 billion in the year-ago quarter.

Share Repurchase and Dividend Update

During the first quarter, HCA Holdings repurchased 5.1 million shares of its common stock for $424 million.

At Mar 31, 2017, the company had $1.429 billion remaining under the existing $2 billion authorization.

Guidance for 2017

The company retained the earnings guidance provided in the fourth quarter. It expects 2017 revenues of approximately $43–$44 billion, adjusted EBIDTA of $8.40–$8.7 billion; earnings per share of $7.20–$7.60 and capital expenditure of nearly $2.9 billion.
