CompX International Inc. Price, Consensus and EPS Surprise
Security Products generated sales of $33.35 million, a 9% increase from $30.68 million. The segment gross margin rose 23% to $11.79 million, while operating income advanced 39% to $7.99 million. The segment’s gross margin rate improved to 35.4% from 31.1%, and its operating margin widened to 24% from 18.8%.
Marine Components sales increased 6% to $10.27 million from $9.68 million. The gross margin grew 12% to $3.75 million, and operating income rose 16% to $2.77 million. Its gross margin rate increased to 36.5% from 34.5%, while the operating margin improved to 27% from 24.7%.
For the first six months of 2026, company-wide sales rose 4.4% to $84.18 million, and net income increased 23.9% to $13.11 million. The operating cash flow improved to $6.05 million from $4.59 million. CompX ended June with $52.42 million of cash and cash equivalents.
Management Commentary
Management attributed the quarterly sales increase to broader strength in Security Products and greater Marine Components demand from industrial customers. Security Products benefited from sales increases of $0.9 million in healthcare, $0.7 million in transportation, $0.5 million through distributors and $0.4 million in tool storage.
Marine Components recorded $1.6 million of higher industrial-market sales, partly offset by a $1-million decline in government-market sales. Management said that supply chains were stable, and transportation and logistics delays remained minimal.
Factors Influencing the Results
The increase in consolidated profitability reflected higher sales and improved gross margins, primarily in Security Products and, to a lesser extent, Marine Components. Cost of sales declined to 64.4% of quarterly revenues from 68.1%, while operating expenses were essentially flat, providing greater expense coverage as sales increased.
Security Products margins benefited from a more favorable customer and product mix, lower employer-related medical expenses and a one-time recovery of import costs recognized in the quarter. Marine Components also benefited from favorable mix, although higher maintenance and supply costs provided a partial offset.
Interest income declined to $662,000 from $846,000 because of lower average interest rates and reduced cash balances. CompX also noted continued increases in tariffs and shipping costs for certain imported materials, particularly electronic components, along with inflationary pressure on some domestically sourced inputs.
Outlook
CompX expects 2026 sales to exceed the 2025 levels. Management anticipates continued strength in healthcare, transportation and tool-storage demand within Security Products. Marine Components growth is expected to be led by industrial markets, particularly aeroderivative demand, while recreational marine and towboat demand should remain relatively consistent with 2025, excluding a prior-year customer stocking event.
The company expects full-year gross and operating margins to exceed the 2025 reported levels, although tariffs, raw-material costs and product and customer mix could pressure second-half margins. Planned 2026 capital expenditure is $5.5 million, primarily for manufacturing capacity, automation and facility improvements.
Other Developments
CompX’s board declared a regular quarterly dividend of $0.30 per Class A share, payable Sept. 15 to shareholders of record Sept. 3. The company also had 523,647 shares remaining under its repurchase authorization as of June 30.
