Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • CoreWeave's backlog reached $104.2 billion as revenues more than doubled in the second quarter.
  • CRWV raised 2026 capital spending to $35-$39 billion, while debt exceeds $32 billion.
  • CoreWeave faces downward earnings revisions, valuation risks and rising interest expense.

CoreWeave, Inc. (CRWV - Free Report) has emerged as one of the most prominent AI-focused cloud infrastructure providers. Its platform is designed for accelerated computing and AI workloads, giving customers access to large amounts of GPU capacity without building their own infrastructure. Since its IPO in 2025, CRWV has become one of the most watched AI infrastructure stocks, but its stock has been very volatile.

In the past three months, its shares have slipped 12.7% against the Zacks Internet-Software Market’s growth of 12.6%. The stock has underperformed the Zacks Computer & Technology sector and the S&P 500 Composite, which rose 0.8% and 3.2%, respectively, over the same period.

CoreWeave operates in an increasingly competitive AI cloud market. Its main direct rivals include Nebius Group N.V. (NBIS - Free Report) , while hyperscalers like Microsoft Azure (MSFT - Free Report) compete with far greater scale and financial resources. MSFT and NBIS have both grown 21.4% and 3.8%, respectively, in the past three months.

After a powerful rally earlier in 2026, CRWV stock has pulled back over the past three months, raising a key question for investors: Is this a buying opportunity, a stock to hold through volatility, or a warning to get out? The answer depends largely on how investors weigh CoreWeave's enormous AI-cloud opportunity against its heavy capital spending, debt burden and still-negative GAAP earnings.

The Bull Case for CRWV Stock

CoreWeave is operating in one of the fastest-growing areas of technology, with revenues more than doubling in the second quarter and backlog reaching $104.2 billion, up 246% year over year. Management also disclosed that more than $25 billion of additional net customer commitments were added early in the third quarter. That backlog gives investors substantial visibility into future revenues. Growth is broad-based across infrastructure, software and customer contracts. The company expects to reach approximately $250 million in ARR by year-end, with an optimistic outlook for 2027 ARR of $18.5-$19.5 billion.

CoreWeave’s growing infrastructure footprint is a key competitive advantage. The company has more than 1.5 GW of active power across 51 data centers and approximately 4.2 GW of contracted capacity. Recent capacity additions, along with liquid cooling, high-speed interconnects and modular deployments, allow CoreWeave to support large-scale AI workloads. Its expansion into APAC, including a 360-MW project in Indonesia, further broadens its global reach. It is on track to deploy more than eight GW of active power by 2030, despite regulatory challenges.

CoreWeave’s edge is its AI-focused infrastructure, large GPU clusters, advanced networking and early access to NVIDIA’s (NVDA - Free Report) newest systems. It became the first AI cloud provider to complete system-level validation of NVDA Vera Rubin NVL72, reaffirming its leadership in next-generation AI infrastructure. In January, NVIDIA increased its investment in CoreWeave to $2 billion. CoreWeave maintains deep relationships with suppliers to ensure capacity and manage costs amid supply challenges. It secured critical supply agreements, including with NVIDIA and Solidigm, to support capacity needs.

CRWV’s Growth Comes at a Huge Cost

Management remains wary of enormous capital requirements, leverage, GPU depreciation, customer concentration and the possibility that AI infrastructure supply will eventually grow faster than demand. CoreWeave spent approximately $9.4 billion on capital expenditures in the second quarter alone. The company subsequently increased its full-year 2026 capital expenditure outlook to between $35 billion and $39 billion. That is enormous relative to current revenues. It is effectively making a massive bet that today's AI computing shortage will persist long enough for the newly deployed infrastructure to generate attractive returns.

CoreWeave reported a $626 million GAAP net loss compared with a $290 million loss a year earlier. Net interest expense rose to $640 million from $267 million. Adjusted operating margin was just 5%, even though adjusted EBITDA margin stood at 59%. That gap highlights the high costs of depreciation, financing and scaling the infrastructure base. With more than $32 billion in debt and equity capital secured, leverage remains a concern. Interest expense is expected to climb further to $860-$940 million.

Furthermore, CoreWeave must execute perfectly to justify the enormous infrastructure investment embedded in its business model. If AI spending slows, customer concentration becomes problematic, financing costs remain elevated or infrastructure deployment takes longer than expected, the downside could be significant.

CRWV’s Unfavorable Estimate Revision Trend

CRWV’s estimates are being revised downward dramatically. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for its earnings for 2026 has been revised south by 18.4% over the past 60 days.

Valuation Risks

CRWV stock is not cheap, as its Value Style Score of F suggests a stretched valuation at this moment. In terms of Price/Book, CRWV shares are trading at 7.96X, higher than the Internet Software industry’s 4.91X, but it could mean more risk than opportunity.

NBIS and MSFT shares are trading at multiples of 5.54X and 8.39X, respectively.

The Investment Call: Buy, Hold or Bail CRWV Stock?

CRWV’s enormous backlog, rapidly expanding revenue base and direct exposure to AI compute demand give it a powerful growth engine. At the same time, investors remain cautious of hefty annual capital expenditure, rising interest expense, substantial leverage and continuing GAAP losses. Ultimately, CRWV’s future growth will depend not just on strong AI demand, but on its ability to turn that demand into steady cash flow and higher profits. That is what investors should watch most closely.

For investors with a multi-year horizon, CRWV looks more like a cautious Buy than a Bail after the pullback. For investors who already own CRWV, holding seems the appropriate action right now. With a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), CRWV appears to be treading a middle-of-the-road path, and new investors may be better off trading with caution.
