Herc Holdings (HRI) Moves 3.8% Higher: Will This Strength Last?

Read MoreHide Full Article

Herc Holdings (HRI - Free Report) shares ended the last trading session 3.8% higher at $146.27. The jump came on an impressive volume with a higher-than-average number of shares changing hands in the session. This compares to the stock's 17% loss over the past four weeks.

Herc Holdings' shares have been performing well this year, gaining 27% over the past six months. Sustained momentum from its stellar second-quarter 2026 performance in July has helped the stock. In the second quarter, HRI reported better-than-expected earnings per share and revenues. The top line also improved significantly year over year owing to a 23% increase in equipment rental revenues resulting from the larger fleet size after the H&E acquisition, higher mega-project activity and revenue synergies.

This equipment rental supplier is expected to post quarterly earnings of $3.24 per share in its upcoming report, which represents a year-over-year change of +46%. Revenues are expected to be $1.38 billion, up 6.1% from the year-ago quarter.

Earnings and revenue growth expectations certainly give a good sense of the potential strength in a stock, but empirical research shows that trends in earnings estimate revisions are strongly correlated with near-term stock price movements.

For Herc Holdings, the consensus EPS estimate for the quarter has remained unchanged over the last 30 days. And a stock's price usually doesn't keep moving higher in the absence of any trend in earnings estimate revisions. So, make sure to keep an eye on HRI going forward to see if this recent jump can turn into more strength down the road.
