Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Ciena posted record $1.67B revenue, while adjusted EPS surged 215% year over year to $2.11.
  • Optical networks revenue grew more than 45%, driven by RLS, Waveserver, interconnects and cloud demand.
  • Ciena expects fiscal 2027 revenue to grow at least 30%, though supply constraints may limit upside.

Ciena Corporation (CIEN - Free Report) is benefiting from a solid industry demand environment, supported by rising investments in network infrastructure and increasing bandwidth requirements driven by AI. In the fiscal third quarter, the company reported record revenue of $1.67 billion, up 37% year over year. Adjusted operating margin reached a record 22.5%, while adjusted earnings per share rose 215% year over year to $2.11. Strong customer demand and order flow resulted in a substantial increase in backlog, which reached $8.5 billion at the end of the quarter. The company expects to exit fiscal 2026 with more than $10 billion in backlog.

Optical connectivity remains an important growth driver as AI increases bandwidth and network traffic requirements. Ciena said high-speed, low-latency optical connectivity has become a critical enabler for AI-driven network and data center investments. The company’s combined optical networks revenue, including interconnects, grew more than 45% year over year in the fiscal third quarter. RLS and Waveserver systems each grew more than 55%, while interconnects more than doubled year over year. Direct cloud provider revenue also increased more than 80%.

Ciena continues to see strong adoption of its optical portfolio. WaveLogic 6 Extreme remains the only 1.6-terabit high-performance modem on the market, while its ramp has exceeded that of the previous WaveLogic 5e generation. Its intelligent line systems have also maintained strong customer adoption, with Ciena holding roughly 70% market share in disaggregated optical line systems. The company expects initial customer standardization of RLS Hyper-Rail by the end of 2026, with material revenue expected to ramp throughout 2027.

However, supply remains a key constraint. On the last earnings call, management stated industry demand is ahead of available capacity and expects the supply-and-demand imbalance to continue through at least 2028. To address this, the company has secured long-term agreements for key components through 2029 and is expanding its supplier base.

Ciena expects fiscal 2027 revenue to grow at least 30% year over year to $8.3-$8.4 billion, with supply-driven upside. The company also expects gross margins of at least 45-46% and adjusted operating margins of 25-27%. Ciena’s strong optical demand, growing backlog and expanding capacity position it for continued growth, although supply constraints remain a key hurdle.
