Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Amazon Now crossed $1 billion in annualized gross sales after rapid quarterly order growth.
  • Amazon Now serves 60 plus cities with over 750 fulfillment centers and targets 100 cities by Diwali.
  • Sustaining momentum may hinge on order frequency and average order value as Amazon expands.

Amazon's (AMZN - Free Report) India business is back in focus after its quick-commerce arm, Amazon Now, crossed $1 billion in annualized gross sales over the trailing three months, a threshold the company describes as the fastest scale-up of any e-commerce unit in its India history.

According to Amazon India's own disclosure, orders on the platform have doubled every quarter since launch, with daily order volumes now around 700,000, translating to roughly a 10% share of the quick-commerce market by orders and about 14% by value. The service has expanded fourfold in under ten weeks, reaching more than 60 cities and towns through a network of more than 750 micro- and urban-fulfillment centers, with Amazon targeting 100 cities by Diwali and 1,000 dark stores by year-end as part of a previously announced plan to cover over 300 cities nationally.

This India push sits alongside broader momentum reflected in Amazon's global numbers. For the second quarter of 2026, the company reported worldwide net sales of $200.6 billion, up 20% year over year. Its International segment, which includes India, posted net sales of $42.2 billion, up 15% year over year, with segment operating income rising to $1.7 billion from $1.5 billion a year earlier. Separately, Amazon has been testing a Hindi-language version of its generative-AI assistant, Alexa+, among Indian users, signaling continued investment in the market ahead of a full rollout, though no India launch date has been confirmed.

The picture is not without caveats. Building and operating hundreds of dark stores and maintaining hyperlocal inventory is capital-intensive, and Amazon entered India's quick-commerce race well after rivals such as Blinkit, Instamart and Zepto had already built scale. Whether the momentum holds will depend on order frequency and average order value as the network moves from metros into smaller towns with thinner margins and less delivery density.

Amazon Competes With Walmart and DoorDash

Amazon's quick-commerce push in India draws a natural comparison to two U.S.-listed peers navigating similar instant-delivery bets. Walmart (WMT - Free Report) , through its majority stake in Flipkart, operates Flipkart Minutes, directly competing with Amazon Now in the same Indian cities and price segments. Walmart's scale and existing supply chain give it leverage comparable to Amazon's, making this rivalry a proxy battle between two U.S. retail giants on foreign soil. DoorDash (DASH - Free Report) , better known for U.S. food delivery, has been expanding into grocery and instant-commerce internationally, testing whether its logistics model translates beyond restaurants. Unlike Amazon, both Walmart and DoorDash face different regulatory and capital exposure as publicly listed U.S. companies reporting segment performance each quarter.
