Key Takeaways

  • Flowers Foods' Q2 2026 volume fell 5.8%, while Branded Retail volume dropped 7.6%.
  • Flowers Foods is expanding smaller loaves, sourdough and protein products to match shifting demand.
  • Nature's Own Perfectly Crafted sales rose more than 8%, helped by Sourdough and Italian Herb varieties.

Flowers Foods, Inc. (FLO - Free Report) is dealing with persistent volume pressure in the fresh packaged bread category as strained household budgets, greater price sensitivity and shifting consumer preferences affect purchasing behavior. Consumers are increasingly moving toward different package sizes and product attributes, leaving the company focused on better aligning its portfolio with evolving demand.

The pressure was evident in the second quarter of 2026. Total company volume declined 5.8% year over year, while Branded Retail volume fell 7.6%. Circana-based data presented by Flowers Foods showed unit sales for its fresh packaged breads decreasing 9.5%. Traditional loaf remained a key area of weakness, with lower consumption, trade-down activity and competitive pressure affecting demand.

Flowers Foods is accelerating innovation to address areas where its portfolio is underpenetrated. Its plans include expanding small and half-loaf offerings and introducing additional sourdough and protein products. These initiatives are aimed at consumer preferences around affordability, portion control, reduced waste and differentiated product attributes. The innovation pipeline is expected to expand through the second half of 2026 and into spring 2027.

Some differentiated offerings delivered better performance during the quarter. Nature’s Own Perfectly Crafted posted sales growth of more than 8% and gained both dollar and unit share, helped by Sourdough and Italian Herb varieties. Flowers Foods also identified sourdough as a meaningful area of consumer demand, noting that the subcategory has grown to approximately $1.3 billion.

The company’s response to volume pressure is centered on filling portfolio gaps in smaller formats, sourdough, protein and other differentiated offerings. Flowers Foods is working to bring these products to market as consumer preferences continue to shift, making execution around innovation and portfolio alignment a central part of its efforts to address current volume weakness.
