GNE vs. ZEO: Which Clean Energy Stock Is the Better Buy?

Read MoreHide Full Article

Genie Energy Ltd. (GNE - Free Report) and Zeo Energy Corp. (ZEO - Free Report) are two energy companies with distinct operating profiles. Genie Energy is an energy services company primarily engaged in supplying electricity and natural gas to residential, small business and commercial customers across deregulated U.S. markets.

Zeo Energy, meanwhile, is primarily a residential solar energy solutions provider offering the sale, design, procurement, installation and maintenance of solar systems, along with roofing, battery storage and other energy-efficiency products.

Genie Energy shares have gained 17.4% over the past six months, significantly outperforming ZEO’s 72.4% decline.

However, stock price performance alone does not provide a complete basis for an investment decision. Therefore, a closer look at the companies’ business fundamentals is warranted.

Roded Expansion Supports GNE’s Growth Prospects

A notable recent development at Genie Energy is the expansion of its Roded Recycling business, in which GNE holds a 72.2% interest. Roded is increasing production in Israel amid strong demand for its recycled-plastic pallets and is nearing capacity at its existing facility. The company has also received a commitment from Israel’s minister of environment to fund a material portion of the cost of a larger manufacturing plant.

Roded is preparing to manufacture a second product using the same recycled-plastic feedstock. It has also received certification under Verra’s Plastic Waste Reduced Standard, enabling it to monetize plastic credits generated from the waste it processes.

These developments could strengthen GNE’s longer-term growth profile by expanding Roded’s production capacity, diversifying its product portfolio and adding plastic-credit revenues that may support profitability. More importantly, Roded is preparing to enter the significantly larger U.S. market and has identified potential manufacturing sites in the Southeast.

Management believes that Roded’s low-cost recycled feedstock and patented technology could provide a competitive advantage while enabling the business to expand beyond pallets into additional products. Successful execution could gradually make Roded a more meaningful contributor to Genie Renewables and help diversify GNE’s earnings beyond its core retail energy operations.

Commercial Energy & Storage Expand ZEO’s Opportunities

A key recent development at Zeo Energy is its continued expansion into commercial energy and long-duration energy storage, building on its acquisition of Heliogen in August 2025. The company is integrating Heliogen’s concentrated solar power and energy-storage technology with its existing clean-energy platform and pursuing engineering-services agreements for long-duration storage projects.

Management is also evaluating several projects designed to provide behind-the-meter power, particularly for data centers and other energy-intensive applications. This expansion could diversify ZEO’s revenue base beyond residential solar, while providing exposure to growing commercial and data-center energy demand.

Long-duration storage projects could create larger and potentially longer-lived revenue opportunities, while allowing Zeo to offer a broader range of power solutions. At the same time, its residential business could benefit from improving access to tax-equity capital. Zeo’s principal financing partner closed multiple tax-equity funds in 2026, and the companies are working to expand funding capacity, which management believes could support higher solar installation volumes through the remainder of 2026 and into 2027.

The combination of commercial-energy diversification, data-center exposure and improved residential-solar funding could broaden ZEO’s growth opportunities and reduce its dependence on a single end-market. However, the commercial strategy remains at an early stage. Heliogen generated no revenue in the first half of 2026, meaning the potential earnings contribution from these initiatives has yet to materialize.

A Look at GNE & ZEO’s Dividend Profiles

Genie Energy has an established common-stock dividend program, paying out 7.5 cents per share quarterly in 2026. The company paid out dividends totaling 15 cents per share in the first half of the year, consistent with the prior-year period.

In comparison, Zeo Energy does not have a comparable dividend history for its publicly traded Class A common stock. Its reported dividend payments instead relate to OpCo Class A convertible preferred units, which accrue dividends at a 10% annual rate.

Thus, GNE provides an established cash-return component for common shareholders, whereas ZEO does not currently offer a similar common-stock dividend stream.

Comparing GNE & ZEO’s Debt Positions

As of June 30, 2026, GNE had $6.8 million in debt compared with $0.6 million for ZEO. However, GNE’s debt-to-cap ratio was lower at 2.6% versus 8.66% for ZEO, reflecting Genie Energy’s considerably larger equity base.

How Do GNE & ZEO Stack Up?

Between the two, Genie Energy appears to be the better investment choice at present. GNE benefits from a profitable core energy business, a lower debt-to-cap ratio, an established dividend and additional growth opportunities through Roded and Genie Renewables.

ZEO offers growth potential from residential solar, commercial energy and long-duration storage, but these initiatives remain at an early stage and carry higher execution risks. Therefore, investors may prefer GNE for its stronger financial profile, dividend income and relatively more established growth platform.
