Wall Street ended a volatile week, with the Dow closing sharply lower on Friday as oil prices continued to surge and Treasury yields rose after the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates earlier in the week for the first time in three years. However, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq ended in positive territory.

How Did the Benchmarks Perform?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) slid 0.2%, or 95.40 points, to close at 51,682.64 points.

The S&P 500 gained 0.2%, or 12.74 points, to finish at 7,650.50 points. Tech stocks were the biggest gainers, while utility stocks were the worst performers.

The Information Technology Select Sector SPDR (XLK) gained 0.8%. The Utilities Select Sector SPDR (XLU) fell 1.4%. Ten of the 11 sectors of the benchmark index ended in negative territory.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq rose 0.4%, or 104.25 points, to end at 26,522.55 points.

The fear gauge, the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), was down 4.08% to 14.81. Decliners outnumbered advancers on the NYSE by a 1.78-to-1 ratio. On the Nasdaq, a 1.42-to-1 ratio favored declining issues. A total of 25.29 billion shares were traded on Friday, higher than the last 20-session average of 16.19 billion.

On the NYSE, there were 92 new highs and 346 new lows. On the Nasdaq, there were 45 new 52-week highs and 162 new lows. On the S&P 500, there were five new 52-week highs and 30 new lows.

Treasury Yields, Oil Prices Impact Markets

Treasury yields continued their rise on Friday, weighing on the broader market. The 10-year Treasury yield topped 5% earlier in the week before somewhat easing on Thursday. However, it rose slightly on Friday to close around 5.006%.

Crude prices eased marginally on Friday but remained above $100 per barrel amid the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.  West Texas Intermediate crude futures dropped 1.58% to end at $100.30 per barrel.

Semiconductor stocks rallied on Friday, helping the Nasdaq end in the green. The S&P 500 also got a boost from the tech stocks. Shares of NVIDIA Corporation ((NVDA - Free Report) ) gained 1.3%, while Micron Technology, Inc. ((MU - Free Report) ) jumped 3.9%. NVIDIA has a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy). Stocks rallied on Thursday after suffering in the earlier session after the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates by a quarter percentage point and signaled another hike by the end of this year. However, Thursday’s enthusiasm was short-lived as stocks retreated in the final trading session of the week.

Inflation remains a major concern that has been weighing on investors’ sentiment. Markets are now pricing in a 54% chance of a 25-basis-point rate hike by the Federal Reserve in its October policy meeting, according to the CME FedWatch tool.

Economic Data

In economic data released on Friday, U.S. industrial production remained unchanged in August, missing analysts’ expectations of a rise of 0.3%. Manufacturing output fell 0.3% in August. Capacity utilization also remained unchanged for the month at 76.3%

Weekly Roundup

The Dow slid for the third straight week, ending 1.7% lower, to record its worst week since March. The S&P 500 also ended the week in losses, ending 0.1% down. The Nasdaq, however, gained 0.7% for the week.
