Can Sovereign AI and Neoclouds Extend Western Digital's Growth Run?

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Western Digital sees neoclouds, sovereign customers and frontier labs broadening HDD demand.
  • Physical AI could support growth from 2027 as training data expands storage requirements.
  • Tight HDD supply is creating pricing leverage as demand rises from sovereigns, neoclouds and AI labs.

Western Digital Corporation’s (WDC - Free Report) HDD demand outlook is increasingly tied to the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure, with management highlighting growing opportunities beyond traditional hyperscale customers.

Neoclouds, frontier AI labs and sovereign AI initiatives are emerging as additional drivers that could extend the company’s growth trajectory. On the last earnings call, management noted that it is witnessing increasing demand from neoclouds as well as sovereign customers and frontier AI labs. Management stated that these emerging customers are seeking HDDs for their economic benefits amid the increasing storage demands.

Western Digital also cited growing storage requirements from physical AI companies and expects physical AI to contribute to growth in calendar 2027 and beyond.

Agentic systems add data at each step of a workflow, and physical AI requires both real-world and synthetic datasets for training and reinforcement learning. Western Digital said an autonomous-vehicle customer’s calendar 2027 exabyte requirement has increased multi-fold, providing a concrete example of this emerging demand.

Management believes similar trends could emerge across robotics, humanoids and industrial automation as companies generate and retain both real-world and synthetic training data.

The tight HDD supply environment may also strengthen WDC’s pricing position with these newer customers. Management specifically said rising demand from sovereigns, neoclouds and AI labs is creating opportunities for increased pricing leverage.

However, this opportunity is unfolding in a highly competitive space. Western Digital competes directly with Seagate Technology Holdings plc (STX - Free Report) in the HDD market. At the same time, companies such as NetApp (NTAP - Free Report) compete for AI storage spending through all-flash and hybrid-flash solutions.

Mapping the Competitive Terrain

Seagate is increasingly engaging with neocloud operators and leading model developers as these customers adopt tiered storage architectures.

Moreover, its HAMR-based Mozaic platform is advancing rapidly, with HAMR-based products representing approximately 40% of Seagate’s nearline exabyte shipment run rate at the end of fiscal 2026. Mozaic 3 products are qualified and operating across all major cloud customers. The company targets mid-20% exabyte growth and is ramping its Mozaic 4 platform, capable of supporting drives of up to 44 terabytes. Mozaic 5 qualification shipments remain on track for late calendar 2027.

NetApp is positioning its platform around AI-ready data infrastructure, providing unified storage, robust security and a single control plane across hybrid multi-cloud environments. The company won approximately 350 AI and data lake modernization deals, with management noting larger deal sizes as customers moved from proof of concept to production. For the first quarter of fiscal 2027, NetApp’s all-flash array revenues came in at $1.31 billion, up 47% from the prior-year quarter.

Management further said some customers are shifting from flash-based systems toward hybrid flash for lower-value workloads as pricing rises. Notably, NetApp secured a significant Asian neocloud customer for storage supporting customer-facing AI services in the last reported quarter and is targeting additional opportunities in neocloud and sovereign-cloud markets.
