Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Alaska Airlines will add three daily Honolulu-Kahului round trips with 737-800s from Oct. 3, 2026.
  • The 737-800s add capacity plus premium seats, in-seat power, USB charging and Starlink Wi-Fi.
  • Hawaiian plans to retire its 717 fleet in 2028 and shift Neighbor Island flying to 737 aircraft.

Alaska Air Group, operating as Alaska Airlines (ALK - Free Report) , is expanding its presence in Hawaii by introducing daily Boeing 737-800 service on select Honolulu-Kahului flights beginning Oct. 3, 2026. The supplemental service will include three Honolulu-Kahului round trips, adding passenger and cargo capacity while helping maintain the frequency and connectivity of Neighbor Island operations. The move is expected to support demand across Hawaii and strengthen the company’s position in the inter-island travel market.

The deployment of 737-800 aircraft also provides ALK with an opportunity to enhance the passenger experience. The aircraft will feature reclining leather seats, in-seat power, USB charging and additional premium seating options, along with upgrade opportunities for Atmos Rewards and Huakai by Hawaiian members. Complimentary beverage and snack service in First Class, along with Starlink Wi-Fi on equipped aircraft, further enhances the offering and could support customer retention and demand for premium travel options.

Alaska Airlines is also moving toward a more modern and standardized fleet for Neighbor Island operations. Hawaiian Airlines plans to retire its 717 fleet in 2028 and transition to Hawaiian-branded 737 aircraft with premium interiors and fast, free Starlink Wi-Fi. The transition could improve operational efficiency and provide a more consistent customer experience over the longer term while allowing the company to accommodate evolving travel demand across the Islands.

Meanwhile, the companies are implementing operational changes to support the expanded service. Beginning Oct. 3, Neighbor Island travelers will need to check in and drop checked bags at least 50 minutes before departure, up from the current 30 minutes. While the revised cutoff could require passengers to allow more time at the airport, the company expects the earlier check-in window to improve baggage handling and support on-time departures. Overall, increased capacity, fleet modernization and enhanced onboard amenities provide multiple avenues for ALK to strengthen its Hawaii network and support its long-term growth strategy.
