Key Takeaways

  • D-Wave secured access to up to $100M in CHIPS funding to advance annealing and gate-model systems.
  • NTT DOCOMO deployed a second D-Wave app, cutting peak location-registration signals by 65.3%.
  • AT&T will expand its use of D-Wave technology to tackle optimization challenges in network operations.

D-Wave Quantum (QBTS - Free Report) is expanding its quantum computing initiatives through government funding, commercial deployments and collaborations with major organizations.

The company executed a definitive agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce based on its previously announced Letter of Intent, providing access to up to $100 million in funding under the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act. This funding is expected to accelerate R&D for the development and scaling of D-Wave’s annealing and gate-model quantum systems.

NTT DOCOMO, Japan’s largest mobile operator, announced the deployment of a second D-Wave-powered quantum computing application in production. The new application reduced location-registration signals generated when devices crossed tracking-area-list (TA-List) boundaries by 65.3% at the daily peak and reduced paging signals by 7.0%. This helped reduce network signaling load and improve operational efficiency.D-Wave also has been awarded up to CAD $300,000 in funding from the National Research Council of Canada's (“NRC”) Applied Quantum Computing Challenge program to advance annealing quantum computing software for commercial applications.

D-Wave and AT&T (T - Free Report) announced an agreement under which AT&T will expand its use of D-Wave’s quantum computing technology. AT&T plans to apply the technology to address complex optimization challenges across its network operations.

Peer Update

Rigetti (RGTI - Free Report) plans to partner with HPE and Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (“PSC”) to build the TangleLab supercomputing testbed. Rigetti will deliver a 9-qubit Novera quantum computing system to the new Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center testbed, which is being funded by a $5 million National Science Foundation grant. This builds on Rigetti’s existing strategic collaboration with HPE to commercialize quantum-enabled high-performance computing systems.

Quantum Computing (QUBT - Free Report) has signed a three-year framework agreement with Hamad Bin Khalifa University ("HBKU") in Qatar to collaborate on quantum computing, quantum sensing and quantum communications. Quantum Computing will provide on-cloud Dirac-3 system access to HBKU, as well as installation in Qatar to support the quantum ecosystem and leadership in the region.
