Zacks Initiates Coverage of SGRP With Neutral Recommendation

Read MoreHide Full Article

Zacks Investment Research has initiated coverage of SPAR Group, Inc. (SGRP - Free Report) with a “Neutral” recommendation. The research report highlights an improving earnings profile, supported by restructuring, a leaner cost base and a strategic shift toward higher-return merchandising work. However, soft top-line momentum, working-capital demands and financing dependence temper the improving profitability picture.

SPAR Group provides merchandising and brand marketing services to retailers, consumer-goods manufacturers and distributors. Its offerings span merchandising, category management, remodel and retail transformation, assembly and installation, fulfillment and business analytics. Following its exit from most international operations, the company operates primarily in the United States and Canada.

The report points to second-quarter 2026 results as evidence that restructuring efforts are beginning to improve earnings. SPAR returned to profitability for the first time since the first quarter of 2025, posting net income of $409,000, or 2 cents per share. Operating income rose to $1.2 million from $715,000 in the prior-year quarter, while adjusted EBITDA climbed 63% year over year to $2.1 million despite a 4.5% decline in revenues.

Cost reductions are another key part of the investment case. Second-quarter SG&A expenses fell to $6.8 million from $7.9 million a year earlier, and management expects the underlying annual SG&A run rate to move toward roughly $20 million as the company progresses into 2027. A greater focus on recurring merchandising programs and more selective participation in lower-return remodel work could also improve earnings quality.

The research report highlights several key factors that could drive SPAR Group's growth. Canada is emerging as another potential growth driver, with revenues increasing 30.5% year over year in the second quarter and 17.1% in the first half of 2026. Meanwhile, technology initiatives involving data analytics, merchandising optimization and scan-based trading could broaden recurring-revenue opportunities, although successful execution and commercial adoption remain important.

However, potential investors should consider certain risks outlined in the report. First-half revenues declined 7.2% year over year, the operating cash outflow totaled $8.7 million and accounts receivable rose sharply. The company has also increased its use of credit and equity-linked financing, raising liquidity and dilution considerations.

The valuation picture is mixed. SGRP currently trades at 0.16X trailing 12-month EV/Sales, versus 2.11X for the Zacks sub-industry. SPAR Group appears relatively inexpensive on a sales-based valuation compared with broader industry benchmarks, which may suggest that some of its operating challenges are already reflected in the stock price. However, its valuation relative to book value is less attractive and indicates that the shares are not uniformly cheap across different measures. The stock also trades above some of its historical valuation norms, limiting the case for calling it deeply undervalued.
