The pullback has pushed valuation close to a five-year low. Yet recurring Autoship sales, customer growth and expansion in pet health continue to provide operating support, leaving investors to weigh a cheaper entry point against near-term execution risks.

Chewy’s One-Month Slide Resets the Debate

The stock’s 24.9% four-week decline comes with a 3.6% reduction in the current fiscal-year earnings estimate over the same period. That combination adds caution for investors looking for evidence that sentiment and expectations have stabilized.

Chewy’s second-quarter fiscal 2026 results were firmer operationally. Net sales rose 7.3% year over year to $3.33 billion, while adjusted EBITDA increased to $226.7 million. The contrast between business performance and falling estimates makes the reset in market expectations the central issue.

CHWY Growth Drivers Remain Intact

Autoship customer sales increased 9.3% year over year and represented 84.6% of total net sales in the second quarter. Active customers reached 21.7 million, while net sales per active customer rose to $602, supporting the recurring-revenue and engagement story.

Health, pharmacy and newer offerings add growth avenues beyond core retail. Freshpet, Inc. (FRPT - Free Report) also shows that parts of the pet market remain capable of faster expansion, with second-quarter 2026 net sales rising 15.5% to $305.6 million. That performance provides useful context for category demand and competitive intensity.

Chewy Faces Consumer and Margin Pressure

Pressure remains visible in discretionary purchases and premiumization. Treat sales growth slowed more sharply than core food in the second quarter, while management said broader discretionary attachment remained pressured across consumables and hard goods.

Profitability also benefited from items that may not repeat. Roughly $10 million of second-quarter upside came from timing-related benefits, while more than $5 million reflected discrete items. Management expects gross margin to decline modestly sequentially in the third quarter as those benefits normalize.

CHWY Valuation Near a Five-Year Low

CHWY trades at 0.53X forward 12-month sales, only slightly above its five-year low of 0.52X and well below the five-year median of 1.12X. The discount is substantial, but weaker estimates and consumer pressure can keep a low multiple from rerating quickly.

Petco Health and Wellness Company, Inc. (WOOF - Free Report) offers another industry reference point. Petco reported second-quarter 2026 net sales of about $1.5 billion, up 0.05%, while comparable sales increased 0.6%. The mixed peer backdrop reinforces that valuation should be considered alongside each company’s growth, margin and execution profile.

Chewy’s Signals Still Point to Caution

Chewy’s lower valuation and recurring sales base provide support, but the recent share decline, estimate cuts and margin normalization keep the near-term setup unsettled. The key question is whether operating gains can continue while discretionary demand remains soft and temporary profit benefits fade.

CHWY currently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell). It has a Growth Score of A, a Value Score of B, a Momentum Score of C and a VGM Score of A. The favorable growth and value characteristics contrast with weaker near-term earnings-revision signals, underscoring the difference between an inexpensive stock and one whose expectations have fully reset.
