AI Boom-Led Memory Chip Demand to Boost Micron's DRAM Revenues in Q4

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Micron's Q4 DRAM revenue estimate points to 325.8% year-over-year growth, fueled by AI memory demand.
  • Tighter HBM supply, rising data center demand and better memory pricing should support Micron's quarter.
  • NVIDIA, AMD and Marvell partnerships give Micron exposure to multiple AI platforms and memory opportunities.

Micron Technology, Inc. (MU - Free Report) is set to report its fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 results after the market closes on Sept. 30. Expectations remain high, with the company benefiting from strong demand for memory chips as artificial intelligence (AI) spending continues to rise.

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for fourth-quarter revenues and non-GAAP earnings per share calls for year-over-year growth of 349.5% and 938%, respectively. These estimates point to another strong quarter for the memory chipmaker.

Micron’s Dynamic Random Access Memory (“DRAM”) business is expected to have remained the biggest contributor to growth. Strong AI infrastructure spending, rising demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and improving memory pricing should have provided important support to the segment during the quarter.

AI Demand Strengthens Micron’s DRAM Business

Micron is benefiting from a powerful shift in the semiconductor industry. The rapid adoption of generative AI and large language models is increasing the need for high-performance memory, giving the company a favorable demand environment.

AI systems process and store enormous amounts of data, requiring memory with higher capacity and bandwidth. This makes DRAM an increasingly important component of AI servers and other high-performance computing systems.

Against this backdrop, DRAM is expected to have been Micron’s biggest growth engine in the fourth quarter. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for DRAM revenues stands at $38.26 billion, indicating a massive 325.8% increase from the year-ago quarter.

The expected growth is not simply a result of higher demand. Micron is also benefiting from an improved memory market. The industry previously struggled with excess supply, weak pricing and high inventories. Those conditions have improved, leading to a healthier balance between supply and demand.

This improvement should have supported DRAM pricing during the fourth quarter and helped Micron expand profitability. The combination of stronger AI demand and better pricing conditions makes DRAM the key area to watch in the upcoming results.

HBM Emerges as a Key Growth Driver for MU

HBM is becoming increasingly important to Micron’s growth story. AI accelerators require HBM to deliver the high memory bandwidth needed to run increasingly complex AI workloads.

Micron has strengthened its position in this market through the mass production of HBM for NVIDIA Corporation’s (NVDA - Free Report) next-generation AI chips. NVIDIA’s expanding AI platform gives Micron direct exposure to one of the fastest-growing areas of the semiconductor market.

HBM supply remains relatively tight, while demand from AI data centers continues to grow. This favorable setup should have supported Micron’s HBM sales and pricing in the quarter under review.

Micron is also making progress with newer generations of HBM. Management has highlighted strong demand for HBM4, while its HBM4 12-high ramp is progressing faster than the earlier HBM3E 12-high ramp. This suggests that HBM could become an even larger contributor to Micron’s revenues and profitability over time.

Strategic AI Partnerships Add to Micron’s Q4 Opportunity

Micron’s relationships with leading semiconductor and technology companies are another positive factor heading into the fourth-quarter earnings.

Its partnership with NVIDIA is particularly important. NVIDIA has selected Micron as a major HBM supplier for its Blackwell GPUs and Vera Rubin AI platform. As hyperscalers and other businesses continue to increase spending on AI infrastructure, demand for these advanced memory products should remain strong.

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD - Free Report) is another important customer. Micron’s HBM3E products are used in AMD’s Instinct MI350 AI accelerators. As AMD expands its AI accelerator business, growing adoption of these products should have created additional demand for Micron’s memory solutions in the fourth quarter.

Micron is also working with Marvell Technology, Inc. (MRVL - Free Report) on advanced memory solutions for AI applications. Marvell’s growing focus on custom AI silicon could create another avenue for Micron to participate in the expansion of AI infrastructure. These relationships are important because they give Micron exposure to multiple AI platforms rather than relying on a single customer or product.

The aforementioned factors are likely to have driven Micron Technology’s overall growth in the to-be-reported quarter. MU currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.
