Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Caterpillar agrees to acquire John Fabick Tractor, expanding its direct presence across key U.S. markets.
  • CAT plans to strengthen customer relationships and aftermarket parts, maintenance and service opportunities.
  • Caterpillar's RPMGlobal and Skycatch deals expand its mining technology, digitalization and AI capabilities.

Caterpillar Inc. (CAT - Free Report) is using acquisitions to strengthen its competitive position beyond traditional heavy equipment manufacturing. The company’s latest move is an agreement to acquire John Fabick Tractor Company, a CAT dealer serving parts of Missouri, IL, the entire state of Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

The transaction is expected to close within 30 days, subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions.
The Fabick deal is notable because it expands Caterpillar’s direct presence within its dealer ecosystem. Fabick has more than 10 decades of customer relationships and provides CAT equipment, parts and services across construction, agriculture, emergency power and other markets.

For Caterpillar, the transaction is intended to support a seamless ownership transition while strengthening customer experience and long-term growth in the territory. The acquisition also fits with CAT’s broader strategy of leveraging its dealer network to deepen aftermarket relationships, which can generate recurring parts, maintenance and service opportunities over the equipment lifecycle.

Caterpillar has also been expanding through acquisitions in higher-value technology areas this year. In February 2026, CAT acquired RPMGlobal, strengthening its portfolio of data-driven mining technology and software solutions. In July, the company acquired Skycatch, a provider of spatial data capture, processing and analysis solutions for mining. Skycatch’s technology would complement RPM and MineStar solutions by integrating near-real-time spatial data and AI capabilities to improve mine-site safety, productivity and predictability.

Together, these transactions illustrate CAT’s focus on acquiring capabilities that complement its core equipment portfolio while expanding its exposure to digitalization, automation and services.

Peer Deere & Company (DE - Free Report) acquired Tenna LLC, a construction technology company, in February 2026. The acquisition added mixed-fleet operations and asset tracking capabilities that can integrate with Deere’s broader digital ecosystem.

Komatsu Ltd. (KMTUY - Free Report) is pursuing a similar strategy by strengthening its aftermarket capabilities. In February 2026, Komatsu agreed to acquire the assets of SRC of Lexington, a U.S. supplier of remanufactured construction and mining equipment components. The transaction is designed to expand Komatsu’s North American remanufacturing capabilities and improve customer support across the equipment lifecycle.
