Sandisk Bets on AI and Enterprise SSDs: Can It Outpace MU & STX?

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Sandisk is ramping BiCS 8, preparing BiCS 10 and investing in HBF for emerging AI storage architectures.
  • Datacenter reached 38% of Sandisk's bit portfolio as enterprise TLC SSDs and QLC Stargate gained traction.
  • Micron expands QLC and Gen 6 SSDs, while Seagate scales HAMR-based Mozaic drives for AI storage.

Sandisk Corporation (SNDK - Free Report) is benefiting from continued innovation across NAND flash and enterprise storage products, strengthening its position in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud and edge markets. In fiscal 2026, SNDK ramped BiCS 8 to the majority of its bit production, improving performance, density and power efficiency across TLC and QLC products. The company is also preparing to ramp BiCS 10 while investing in high-bandwidth flash (HBF), which management believes could play a larger role in emerging AI memory and storage architectures. These initiatives strengthen SNDK’s competitive position against Micron Technology (MU - Free Report) and broader data-storage rival Seagate Technology (STX - Free Report) .

Sandisk’s expanding enterprise SSD portfolio is helping it capitalize on rising AI infrastructure requirements. The company scaled compute-focused TLC enterprise SSDs across a broad range of hyperscale and AI infrastructure customers and began generating revenues from its QLC Stargate platform in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026. This gives SNDK exposure to performance-intensive compute workloads and high-capacity AI data lakes.

Datacenter accounted for 38% of SNDK’s bit portfolio exiting fiscal 2026, up from roughly 12% a year earlier. Management also expects Datacenter to rise to roughly 50% in 2026 from about 30% of NAND market TAM in calendar 2025 and continue outpacing the broader market in 2027.

Technology expansion beyond Datacenter provides another growth avenue. Sandisk serves smartphones, PCs, automotive, robotics and other edge applications, where AI-enabled devices and premium configurations are expected to increase storage content. Its vertically integrated model, spanning NAND design, manufacturing partnerships, controller development, system-level engineering and back-end assembly, allows the company to optimize performance and costs across the storage value chain.

The company targets mid-to-high-teens bit-supply growth, primarily through technology-node transitions rather than wafer additions. For fiscal 2027, capital spending is expected to increase year over year as BiCS 8 and BiCS 10 ramp, while investment relative to revenue is expected to decline to approximately 6%.

SNDK Faces Tough Competition

Micron Technology competes directly with Sandisk in NAND, QLC and enterprise SSDs. MU generated roughly $5 billion in data-center SSD revenues in the third quarter of fiscal 2026 and cited record share gains in the category. It is expanding QLC products, PCIe Gen 6 SSDs and 245-terabyte drives, while its HBM, high-capacity DIMMs and LPDRAM portfolio gives it broader exposure to AI infrastructure. Micron Technology also highlighted its leadership in SOCAMM and said its strategic customer agreements are expected to cover roughly one-third of NAND bits at the company’s target level, supporting longer-term demand visibility.

Seagate Technology challenges Sandisk from the mass-capacity side through its HAMR-based Mozaic portfolio. Data-center demand represents about 90% of STX’s exabyte shipments, while the vast majority of nearline exabytes are allocated into calendar 2028. Mozaic 3 is qualified across major cloud customers; Mozaic 4 supports up to 44TB per drive and is ramping with leading CSPs, while Mozaic 5 qualification shipments are targeted for late 2027. Seagate Technology’s focus on tiered AI storage could capture a larger share of hyperscale storage spending alongside SSDs.
