Nebius Strengthens Token Factory With Inferize Acquisition

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Nebius Group acquired Inferize to strengthen production inference capabilities within Token Factory.
  • Inferize aims to cut cold-start delays, reduce idle GPU time and improve capacity utilization.
  • The deal adds GPU systems expertise as Nebius expands inference and post-training workloads.

Nebius Group N.V. (NBIS - Free Report) has acquired Inferize, an inference optimization company, to strengthen the production inference capabilities of its Nebius Token Factory managed inference platform. The acquisition brings Inferize’s technology and systems engineering team into Nebius Token Factory. The technology is designed to reduce the time required to launch and scale large AI models and make inference workloads more elastic. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Inferize’s technology is focused on addressing cold starts, or the time required for AI models to load before serving a request. Cold starts can result in assigned GPUs remaining idle when demand rises and new instances are launched, as well as when model weights are updated during workloads such as reinforcement learning. This can require platforms to maintain spare capacity to meet service-level targets. Inferize’s technology is designed to reduce this idle GPU time, allowing capacity to scale more closely with actual usage while supporting higher capacity utilization and improved token economics.

Management highlighted that effective inference requires systems to respond as customer demand changes, including the speed at which additional capacity becomes available. Management also stated that Inferize brings technology aimed at accelerating this process, along with a team experienced in GPU systems. The technology and team will be integrated into Token Factory, with the team’s contribution expected to extend beyond the initial integration.

The acquisition adds another layer to Nebius’ production inference efforts. Eigen AI previously brought model, kernel- and system-level optimization into Nebius Token Factory, while Clarifai’s core team and licensed technology added system-level inference and compute orchestration.

On the last earnings call, Nebius highlighted the growing importance of reliable, high-performance inference as customers build complex AI systems involving multiple models, inference engines and tools. The company is expanding Token Factory to support these requirements, including inference and post-training workloads. It noted that customers developing their own models generate additional demand for inference, reinforcement learning rollouts, evaluations and synthetic data generation throughout the AI development cycle. These workloads support Nebius’ strategy of providing an integrated platform spanning training, post-training, inference and grounding.

Taking a Look at NBIS’ Competitors

CoreWeave (CRWV - Free Report) is benefiting from acquisitions that broaden its AI cloud platform and strengthen monetization across the AI lifecycle. The company acquired Weights & Biases to expand model development, training, inference and agent-monitoring capabilities, while OpenPipe added AI-agent reinforcement learning capabilities. Its acquisition of Marimo enhances the AI-native developer workflow, integrating notebooks with CoreWeave Cloud, while Monolith strengthens simulation and machine learning capabilities for industrial applications. These acquisitions complement CoreWeave’s infrastructure, inference and developer services, helping expand its platform beyond GPU capacity and deepen customer engagement across AI development, deployment and continuous iteration.

Microsoft (MSFT - Free Report) continues to benefit primarily from organic expansion in Azure, AI, Microsoft 365 and Copilot adoption. Microsoft’s previously completed acquisition of Activision Blizzard, closed in October 2023 for $75.4 billion, remains integrated into its gaming operations alongside Xbox Game Studios and ZeniMax Media. Microsoft is emphasizing strategic partnerships, AI investments, infrastructure expansion and product development to strengthen its competitive position across cloud, AI, productivity and enterprise markets.
