Nutrien to Indefinitely Shut Down Trinidad Nitrogen Operations

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Nutrien will indefinitely shut Trinidad nitrogen operations after persistent gas supply constraints.
  • Nutrien says the closure will not affect 2026 nitrogen sales volume guidance of 9.2-9.7 million tons.
  • NTR will meet customer demand through its North American operations.

Nutrien Ltd. (NTR - Free Report) announced that it will indefinitely shut down its Trinidad Nitrogen operations at the Point Lisas Facility following a comprehensive review of strategic alternatives and discussion with relevant stakeholders. The decision comes in response to ongoing natural gas constraints and supply uncertainty, and is aimed at reducing pressure to enhance its free cash flow and return on invested capital.

Nutrien previously implemented a controlled shutdown of the facility on Oct. 23, 2025, due to port access restrictions and a lack of reliable and economic natural gas supply. With these challenges in mind, the company determined that permanently halting operations would be the optimal path.

The shutdown should not affect Nutrien’s 2026 nitrogen sales volume guidance, as the company had already assumed no production from Trinidad’s operations. Nutrien remains well positioned to meet customer demand and support nitrogen volume growth through its North American operations. Reliability improvements and low-cost debottlenecking projects are expected to help increase production. The move also advances Nutrien’s focus on optimizing its portfolio, supporting the company’s long-term financial flexibility.

The company, on its second-quarter call, raised its 2026 Potash sales volume guidance to 14.2-14.8 million tons from 14.1-14.8 million tons, supported by strong demand in key offshore markets. Global potash shipments are still projected at 74-77 million tons for 2026.  Nitrogen sales volume guidance was maintained at 9.2-9.7 million tons, while Phosphate sales volume guidance remains 2.4-2.6 million tons. The Nitrogen outlook reflects planned reliability improvements and debottlenecking initiatives, while the Phosphate guidance reflects benefits from reliability improvements completed in 2025.

NTR shares have gained 15.9% in the past year compared with the industry’s 49.4% decline in the same period.
