BlackBerry's Alloy Kore Win Adds Over $100 Million to QNX Backlog

Key Takeaways

  • BB secured its first Alloy Kore design win with Coretura, its largest QNX award to date.
  • The Coretura deal adds over $100 million in future royalties to QNX's $950M backlog.
  • Alloy Kore's price is roughly 3x current QNX deployments, but its FY2027 revenue impact will be limited.

BlackBerry Limited (BB - Free Report) has secured its first Alloy Kore design win, giving investors a clearer view of how the platform could expand QNX’s role in software-defined vehicles. The Coretura award is the largest design win in QNX history.

The agreement adds more than $100 million in expected future royalties. That creates a meaningful long-term opportunity, although the timing of production will determine when those royalties become revenues.

BlackBerry Lands a Landmark Alloy Kore Win

Coretura, the commercial-vehicle software joint venture between Volvo Group and Daimler Truck, selected Alloy Kore as the foundational software platform for its next-generation high-performance compute architecture. The planned deployment spans multiple software domains.

The win moves Alloy Kore from a strategic initiative to commercial validation. BlackBerry designed the platform with Vector middleware, common automotive services and QNX foundational software to reduce integration complexity for automakers.

BB Adds More Than $100 Million to QNX Backlog

The Coretura award is expected to contribute more than $100 million of future royalties. QNX’s royalty backlog stood at approximately $950 million at the end of fiscal 2026, giving the new contract notable scale relative to the existing base.

Backlog does not equal immediate revenue. Royalties generally depend on awarded vehicle programs reaching production, so the added value improves BlackBerry’s long-term visibility rather than providing an instant lift to reported results.

BlackBerry Can Capture More Software Value per Vehicle

Management said the Alloy Kore average selling price per instance in the Coretura win is approximately three times the customer’s current QNX operating-system deployment. That supports BlackBerry’s strategy of moving higher in the automotive software stack.

The broader industry is also investing in centralized vehicle computing. NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA - Free Report) positions its Hyperion platform as a production-ready architecture for autonomous vehicles, while Qualcomm Incorporated (QCOM - Free Report) offers the Snapdragon Digital Chassis as an integrated platform for software-defined vehicles. Those efforts underscore the shift toward software-heavy vehicle architectures.

BB’s Near-Term Revenue Benefit Will Be Limited

The size of the award should not be confused with near-term revenue. Management does not expect the Coretura design win to materially change BlackBerry’s fiscal 2027 revenue profile because most royalties will be realized after vehicles enter production.

That timing makes execution important. Production schedules, program launches and customer volumes will determine the pace at which the contracted opportunity converts into QNX revenue and cash flow.

BlackBerry’s Win Broadens Its Automotive Opportunity

Coretura gives BlackBerry a reference customer for Alloy Kore and supports its push to increase software content per vehicle. QNX is also benefiting from growing adoption of higher-performance centralized computing architectures and multiple QNX instances in a single vehicle.

BlackBerry said it is pursuing additional Alloy Kore opportunities with global automakers and major Tier 1 suppliers, particularly in Europe and Asia. Further wins could expand QNX’s royalty runway, but each program will still carry a lead time before production revenue becomes material.

BB’s Growth Profile Gets Support From QNX

The Alloy Kore win strengthens the long-term QNX opportunity, but it does not remove the timing risk between design wins and royalty recognition. Investors therefore have a larger contracted opportunity to monitor, not an immediate earnings contribution of the same size.

BlackBerry currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Its Growth Score of A and Momentum Score of A are favorable, while the Value Score of F points to weaker value characteristics. The VGM Score of B is constructive, but the Zacks Rank suggests a measured stance while investors track execution and backlog conversion.  You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.
