Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Semiconductors gain from AI infrastructure demand, with Semtech benefiting from upward earnings revisions.
  • HF Sinclair's 2026 EPS estimate rose $6.02 to $18.15 in 60 days amid oil-price volatility.
  • Entergy plans $67 billion in investments from 2026 to 2029 to support electricity infrastructure.

Wall Street entered the final quarter of 2026 with substantial gains, although rising Treasury yields, persistent inflation and weakening market breadth have complicated the investment landscape. During the first nine months, the S&P 500 advanced 11.5%, while the Nasdaq Composite surged 15.6%, primarily benefiting from artificial intelligence (AI)-driven optimism. The Dow too gained a modest 17.8% during this period.

However, September exposed underlying vulnerabilities, with the Russell 2000 falling around 5% in the month largely due to growing pressure on small-cap stocks amid rising Treasury yields and concerns over borrowing costs.

October Stock Trend: Can Earnings Sustain Wall Street's Rally?

Historically, October's reputation for volatility stems from market crashes in 1929, 1987 and 2008. Nevertheless, MarketWatch data indicates that the S&P 500 has averaged a 0.5% October gain since 1928, delivering positive returns 58% of the time. More encouragingly, Dow Jones Market Data shows that October has generated average gains of 3% during midterm-election years since 1950.

The fourth-quarter outlook remains supported by corporate fundamentals. FactSet projects 29.5% year-over-year S&P 500 earnings growth for the third quarter and 27.6% for the fourth. However, monetary policy presents a significant counterweight. The Federal Reserve raised interest rates to 3.75%-4% in September, projecting 3.7% PCE inflation for 2026. Meanwhile, the Congressional Budget Office's preliminary estimate places the fiscal 2026 deficit near $2 trillion, reinforcing concerns over Treasury financing costs.

These pressures became evident on Oct. 8, when the S&P 500 declined 0.5% amid oil-price volatility and elevated bond yields.

Investors should therefore favor earnings-backed opportunities over indiscriminate risk-taking, as sustained gains increasingly depend on corporate execution and stabilization in financing costs.

Sector Selection Hinges on Earnings Growth and Balance-Sheet Strength

Sectors with visible earnings momentum and stable demand should be prioritized, particularly technology infrastructure, semiconductors, utilities and select energy companies. Within technology, investors should distinguish companies converting AI investment into revenues, earnings and cash flow from those relying primarily on future growth expectations. Utilities could benefit from rising electricity demand from data centers, although capital-intensive projects and higher financing costs remain risks. Energy companies with disciplined capital spending and strong cash generation may also offer resilience against persistent oil-price volatility.

Conversely, investors should be selective with highly leveraged small-cap companies, speculative growth stocks and unprofitable businesses dependent on cheap financing. Rising Treasury yields increase borrowing costs and can compress the valuations of companies whose expected profits lie far in the future.

3 Sectors to Invest in October 2026 Based on Earnings Quality

Semiconductors remain attractive as AI infrastructure investment supports demand for advanced chips, networking and manufacturing equipment. NVIDIA (NVDA - Free Report) recently reported fiscal second-quarter 2027 revenues of $96.2 billion, up 106% year over year and guided $108 billion in fiscal third-quarter revenues. Semtech (SMTC - Free Report) , carrying a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), is supported by rising AI data-center networking demand and upward earnings revisions. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM - Free Report) holds a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy). Its July and August revenues rose 44.7% and 53.3% year over year, respectively.

Energy deserves attention as geopolitical tensions and supply uncertainty keep oil prices volatile. Brent crude fell to $103.53 per barrel early on Oct. 9 after rising more than 4% in the previous session, according to Reuters. This highlighted the risks of relying solely on short-term oil-price movements. Estimates for HF Sinclair’s (DINO - Free Report) , carrying a Zacks Rank #1, 2026 EPS rose $6.02 to $18.15 in the past 60 days.

The Utilities sector offers a different opportunity with relatively predictable regulated earnings and investment in electricity infrastructure. AI data centers, industrial electrification and grid modernization support long-term demand, although higher interest rates can increase financing costs for capital-intensive projects. Among the stocks within this sector, Entergy (ETR - Free Report) carries a Zacks Rank #2. Entergy plans $67 billion in investment during 2026–2029.
