Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • SpaceX's spectrum deal sparks a sharp sell-off in telecom stocks.
  • IYZ faces pressure from exposure to Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile.
  • Space ETFs could benefit from Starlink's long-term expansion.

Telecommunications stocks sold off sharply on Oct. 10 after Elon Musk’s SpaceX agreed to acquire a nationwide spectrum portfolio to expand Starlink’s satellite internet business into mobile services.

Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T Suffer Steep Losses

Verizon (VZ - Free Report) plunged 8.75%, marking its worst single-day decline since July 2002, as quoted on CNBC. T-Mobile (TMUS - Free Report) dropped 13.27%, its steepest fall since 2013, while AT&T (T - Free Report) slid 9.81%, its worst session since 2000. Meanwhile, SpaceX (SPCX - Free Report) shares edged up about 1.3% on Oct. 9, 2026.

SpaceX to Acquire Spectrum Portfolio

The agreement involves acquiring spectrum assets from Grain Management. SpaceX described the portfolio as offering up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band. The acquisition is intended to strengthen Starlink’s push into mobile connectivity, according to the CNBC article.

Analysts See Long-Term Potential, Limited Near-Term Threat

Several analysts viewed the deal favorably. Evercore ISI said the acquisition gives SpaceX the outline of a more complete network alongside its existing satellite capabilities, as mentioned in the same CNBC source. Analysts believe established U.S. wireless carriers are unlikely to face significant competition in the immediate future, as building a rival ground-based network would require substantial time, infrastructure and investment, per CNBC.

ETF Impact

Verizon-heavy ETF iShares U.S. Telecommunications ETF (IYZ - Free Report) lost 0.9% on Friday. Verizon has about 10% exposure to IYZ while TMUS has 3% focus on IYZ. AT&T also has a 4.4% exposure to the stock.

Meanwhile, SpaceX has solid exposure to ETFs like Baron First Principles ETF (RONB - Free Report) , Roundhill Space & Technology ETF (MARS - Free Report) , Global X Space Tech ETF (ORBX - Free Report) , and VanEck Space ETF (WARP - Free Report) . These ETFs should gain from the deal over the long term.
