This Virginia-based engineering and construction company benefits from strong demand for power infrastructure, growing opportunities in data center-related projects and financial flexibility to support business expansion and shareholder returns. Its diversified operations and investments in fabrication capacity provide additional avenues for growth. However, pressure on Industrial segment margins and the timing of new project awards remain key challenges.

Let us take a closer look at the factors shaping Argan stock’s prospects.

Strong Power Demand Provides AGX With Growth Opportunities

Rising electricity demand is creating opportunities for Argan as utilities and developers seek additional generation capacity. Electrification, domestic manufacturing, electric vehicle adoption and data center construction are increasing the need for reliable power infrastructure. As of July 31, 2026, Argan’s Power backlog included four U.S. gas-fired power plants with a combined capacity of more than 4.1 gigawatts. Natural gas projects accounted for approximately 80% of total backlog, reflecting the company’s established capabilities in complex power plant construction.

Argan expects to add several projects over the next seven to 15 months, with combined-cycle natural gas facilities likely to account for most of its near and mid-term backlog. The company is receiving a significant number of project inquiries and remains selective about opportunities that fit its capabilities and execution capacity. This demand pipeline supports growth, although the timing of new awards and construction starts will determine how quickly these opportunities translate into revenues.

Data Center Investment Creates New Opportunities for AGX

Argan is expanding its Industrial business to capitalize on demand for data center infrastructure. The segment is executing a $125 million project involving the fabrication of thermal expansion and energy storage tanks. To support this work and pursue additional opportunities, the company is building a second fabrication facility in North Carolina, with completion expected in the third quarter of fiscal 2027. This investment increases its capacity to serve customers in the data center and power infrastructure markets.

The new facility is expected to generate more than $10 million in quarterly revenues later in fiscal 2027 and into the following year. Argan also anticipates follow-on projects with the existing customer and sees opportunities to serve other customers. The additional capacity provides a path to higher Industrial revenues and broader exposure to data center-related spending. However, the extent of the contribution will depend on the pace of new work and the company’s ability to execute projects profitably.

AGX’s Strong Balance Sheet Supports Expansion and Returns

Argan’s financial position provides flexibility to invest in business expansion while maintaining shareholder returns. As of July 31, 2026, the company held approximately $1 billion in cash and investments, up from $895 million at the end of fiscal 2026. Net liquidity increased to $440 million from $421 million over the same period, despite $51.7 million in capital returned to its shareholders during the first half of fiscal 2027. With no debt outstanding, Argan has financial capacity to fund operating needs and growth initiatives without relying heavily on external financing.

This financial flexibility supports investments in workforce development and the new North Carolina fabrication facility, while leaving room for acquisitions that complement the existing business. Argan also maintains a quarterly dividend of 50 cents per share and a share repurchase authorization of $200 million. The combination of liquidity, limited capital requirements and shareholder returns gives the company flexibility to pursue growth opportunities while maintaining a strong balance sheet.

AGX’s Earnings Estimates Show a Mixed Trend

AGX’s earnings estimates for fiscal 2027 have increased over the past 30 days to $13.72 per share, while fiscal 2028 estimates have declined to $16.88. The estimates imply year-over-year earnings growth of 40.9% and 23%, respectively.

What Is Hurting AGX’s Prospects?

AGX’s Industrial Margins Face Near-Term Pressure

Argan’s Industrial segment is facing profitability challenges as cost overruns on certain projects weigh on margins. In the second quarter of fiscal 2027, Industrial revenues increased 111% year over year to $76.2 million, but gross margin declined to 7.3% from 12.5% in the year-ago quarter, a contraction of 520 basis points.

The company attributed the weakness to cost estimates on two projects unrelated to its data center work that proved lower than initially expected. AGX expects to complete these projects over the next six months, but Industrial margins may remain below historical levels for another quarter or two. While the data center project and new fabrication facility provide growth opportunities, Argan will need to improve project economics and maintain cost discipline to translate higher revenues into stronger profitability.

AGX’s Revenue Growth Depends on Project Timing and New Awards

Argan’s revenues can fluctuate with the timing of project starts, construction milestones and completions. Consolidated backlog stood at $2.5 billion as of July 31, 2026, down from $2.9 billion at the start of fiscal 2027. Although the company added more than $260 million through scope increases on existing projects and smaller jobs, it did not secure a major new Power project during the quarter. The timing of additional awards therefore remains an important factor in maintaining backlog and future revenue visibility.

The strong fiscal second-quarter revenue performance may also limit sequential growth in the fiscal third quarter, particularly as Industrial revenues are expected to decline from the fiscal second-quarter level for the rest of the year. Although the company expects fiscal 2027 revenues to exceed fiscal 2026 significantly, the pace of growth will depend on project timing and construction progress. Delays in new awards or changes in project schedules may create uneven quarterly results.

AGX’s Valuation Trend

AGX stock is currently trading at a premium compared with the industry peers, with a forward 12-month price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 24.66, as the trend lines suggest below.

Argan and Its Key Infrastructure Competitors

Argan competes with MasTec, Inc. (MTZ - Free Report) , Quanta Services (PWR - Free Report) and EMCOR Group (EME - Free Report) across power generation, infrastructure and related construction markets. The company focuses on complex power generation projects, including natural gas-fired and renewable facilities, while also providing industrial fabrication and Teledata services. MasTec, Quanta and EMCOR have broader exposure across infrastructure and construction markets, including power delivery, electrical and mechanical contracting and building services.

MTZ operates across Power Delivery, Pipeline Infrastructure and Clean Energy & Infrastructure, serving markets tied to grid modernization, power generation, renewable energy, natural gas and data center development. MasTec’s diversified project portfolio provides exposure to multiple areas of infrastructure spending. Quanta offers utility and power infrastructure solutions, along with electrical, mechanical, civil and fabrication services. Its capabilities span several stages of infrastructure development, including utility networks and power generation facilities.

EMCOR provides electrical and mechanical construction, building services and industrial services. The company’s construction operations serve data centers, manufacturing facilities, institutional customers and other commercial markets, while its building and industrial services businesses provide additional exposure to facility maintenance and industrial project activity. This combination gives EMCOR a broader presence across construction and ongoing service markets.

Compared with these competitors, Argan remains more concentrated in complex power generation projects, supported by its Industrial and Teledata operations. MasTec, Quanta and EMCOR have wider exposure across infrastructure markets and service categories, while Argan’s prospects are more closely tied to power project awards, construction schedules and demand for specialized industrial work.

How to Play AGX Stock?

Argan’s growth prospects are supported by rising demand for power generation, expanding data center opportunities and a strong balance sheet that provides flexibility to fund business expansion and return capital to its shareholders. Investments in fabrication capacity and exposure to complex power projects provide additional avenues for growth. Earnings expectations remain mixed, reflecting some uncertainty around the company’s longer-term growth trajectory.

However, pressure on Industrial segment margins, uncertainty around new project awards and the timing of construction activity remain key risks. The stock’s premium valuation relative to industry peers also raises the importance of improving project profitability and converting demand into sustained earnings growth. With a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), AGX offers a balanced investment case. Investors may prefer to monitor margin recovery, backlog replenishment and overall execution before taking a more aggressive position in the stock.
