Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • APLD's Q1 revenues jumped 322% to $341.9 million, but its 76-cent loss per share missed estimates.
  • APLD's $36B contracted revenue base offers growth potential, but $6.4B in debt raises concerns.
  • APLD's shares fell 30.8% in a year and trade at 7.81X sales, well above the industry's 2.45X multiple.

Applied Digital (APLD - Free Report) , a developer of digital infrastructure designed to support high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence workloads, reported mixed first-quarter fiscal 2027 results on Wednesday, with earnings falling short of expectations despite a revenue beat.

The company’s revenues surged 322% year over year to $341.9 million, significantly exceeding the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $134 million. However, its loss from continuing operations attributable to common stockholders widened to 76 cents per share from 7 cents in the prior-year quarter, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a 26-cent loss. Higher operating expenses, sharply increased interest costs and fair-value losses weighed on the bottom line.

Although strong demand for AI infrastructure, rising rental income and improving adjusted EBITDA highlight Applied Digital’s growth potential, its widening GAAP loss and substantial debt burden raise concerns about sustainable profitability. The Zacks Consensus Estimate also projects a wider second-quarter fiscal 2027 loss of 30 cents per share compared with a loss of 11 cents in the prior-year quarter.

Let’s examine Applied Digital’s latest quarterly performance, growth prospects and financial risks to determine whether investors should fold the stock or consider holding it for its long-term AI infrastructure opportunity.

APLD’s Q1 Results Expose Risks to Profitability

Applied Digital’s biggest concern is whether its expanding AI infrastructure business can translate into sustainable profitability without an excessive increase in costs and financing needs. Although adjusted EBITDA improved to $64.4 million from $0.5 million a year ago, the company’s operating loss widened to $62.4 million from $9.8 million. Selling, general and administrative expenses surged 289% year over year to $114.7 million, reflecting higher stock-based compensation, personnel costs and professional fees. Interest expense also jumped 866% to $77.4 million as debt increased. Additionally, $49.5 million in derivative fair-value losses and $11.4 million in investment fair-value losses further pressured results.

As of Aug. 31, 2026, APLD had approximately $3.7 billion in cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash against $6.4 billion in debt. During the quarter, investing activities consumed $2.08 billion, largely reflecting $2.07 billion in purchases of property, equipment and other assets. Financing activities provided $1.54 billion, highlighting the importance of external capital in supporting its expansion. The company has secured approximately $36 billion in contracted revenues across five campuses, but converting these commitments into cash-generating operations depends on completing construction, bringing capacity online and meeting customer requirements. Management expects to place more than 600 megawatts into service over the next 12 months, compared with 250 megawatts over the preceding 12 months. This ambitious ramp-up could support future rental income, but it also increases execution and funding demands. With substantial debt already on its balance sheet and additional campuses requiring financing, delays or cost overruns could weigh on returns and prolong the path to profitability.

Capital Needs and AI Demand Uncertainty Challenge APLD

Applied Digital’s capital-intensive expansion remains a key challenge as it continues investing heavily in data center infrastructure. The company expects significant investments in property and equipment throughout fiscal 2027, while development and expansion require funding for construction, working capital, operating expenses and technology upgrades. During the quarter, Applied Digital had approximately $6.4 billion in debt. Although management expects existing liquidity and financing access to support requirements for at least 12 months, additional funding may not be available on favorable terms, or at all. This could force the company to delay, limit or reduce development plans.

Uncertainty around future AI and high-performance computing demand presents another lingering challenge. Applied Digital cautions that changes in AI and HPC infrastructure requirements, declining demand for its products and services, and delays in customer acquisition or leasing decisions could affect future plans. The company also depends on customers converting their AI investments into sustainable earnings. If demand weakens or customer spending plans change, Applied Digital could face difficulties securing additional leases and generating expected returns on its substantial infrastructure investments. These risks could complicate its efforts to convert contracted revenue into sustainable, profitable growth.

APLD Stock Underperforms Industry, Sector & Peers

Applied Digital’s shares have declined 30.8% over the past year, underperforming the broader Zacks Finance sector, which has gained 7.9%, and the Zacks Financial - Miscellaneous Services industry, which has fallen 25.4%.

APLD has also lagged several AI data-center infrastructure peers, including Hut 8 Corp. (HUT - Free Report) , TeraWulf (WULF - Free Report) and Core Scientific (CORZ - Free Report) . Over the same time frame, Hut 8 Corp.’s shares have surged 71.6%, while TeraWulf and Core Scientific have lost 1.6% and 19.8%, respectively.

Like APLD, Hut 8 Corp., TeraWulf and Core Scientific are expanding into AI and high-performance computing (HPC) data-center infrastructure. These companies compete for power capacity and large customer contracts to support AI workloads. The stronger stock performance of these peers highlights APLD’s relative weakness and puts pressure on the company to turn its infrastructure investments into sustainable growth and profits.

APLD Stock Looks Pricey With an Unfavorable Score

Applied Digital’s shares appear overvalued, as reflected by its Zacks Value Score of F. Applied Digital’s VGM Score of D further reflects an unfavorable overall investment profile. In terms of the trailing 12-month Price/Sales, APLD is trading at 7.76X, higher than the industry’s 2.48X.

Final Thoughts on APLD Stock

Applied Digital’s widening losses, substantial debt, heavy capital requirements and uncertainty surrounding future AI demand raise concerns about its ability to achieve sustainable profitability, despite a substantial long-term contracted revenue base. Its underperformance relative to peers and premium valuation further weaken its investment appeal. Given these risks, APLD is not a preferred investment at present, and investors may be better off staying on the sidelines until the company demonstrates improved financial performance and a clearer path to sustainable profitability.

Currently, Applied Digital stock has a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell).
